Quick guide from the manual
This manual provides technical service information for the Audi 0BF and 0BE Sport Differential systems. It is intended for qualified mechanics and covers identification, component removal, hydraulic control unit service, and fluid maintenance procedures. Always follow safety precautions when working on vehicle drivetrains.
Rear Final Drive Identification
The 0BF and 0BE units are identified by the hydraulic control unit with side chambers. The unit code (e.g., LFW) and production date are stamped on the housing. When replacing the unit, verify the final drive code, PR number, and engine code in the Parts Catalog to ensure correct allocation.
Driveshaft Removal and Installation
The driveshaft must be stored and transported fully extended. When removing, label the position of all parts to maintain balance. Use the T10172 counterhold tool for bolts. Ensure the color markings on the driveshaft and rear final drive align within 30 degrees during reinstallation. Always replace self-locking bolts.
Hydraulic Control Unit Service
The hydraulic control unit is located on the rear final drive. Service requires draining both ATF and gear oil. When replacing the unit or its sensors (G437/G640), adaptation values must be updated using a Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Do not interchange the All Wheel Drive Clutch Valves N445 and N446.
Fluid Maintenance
The system uses separate chambers for ATF and gear oil. Use only specified replacement fluids. The oil level is correct when filled to the lower edge of the fill hole. Always replace drain and check plugs with new seals.
Safety and Precautions
Incorrect repairs can cause final drive malfunction. Testing and servicing must be performed by qualified personnel. Always use a two-column shop hoist and support the vehicle properly. Protect the clutch valves from damage during removal and installation.

Common problems
Check the intermediate bearing for tension before replacing the driveshaft.
Leaks must be corrected immediately; if they cannot be repaired, the entire final drive unit must be replaced.
Ensure the sensor identity is adapted using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Do not replace both G437 and G640 sensors simultaneously.
Before use
- Verify the final drive code, PR number, and engine code.
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
- Use a two-column shop hoist for all driveshaft work.
- Have the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester ready for adaptation procedures.
- Ensure all necessary special tools (e.g., T10172, T10370) are available.
Specs in practice
- Driveshaft bolts
- Tighten in three steps: 30 Nm, then another 30 Nm, then a final 90-degree turn.
- Gear oil/ATF level
- Correct level is reached when fluid is at the lower edge of the fill hole.
- Flange shaft bolt
- Tighten to 50 Nm plus an additional 180-degree turn.
Model compatibility
- 0BF is used in A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8 models.
- 0BE is an enhanced version used exclusively with the V8 TDI engine in the Audi A8.
