The Aircast Elbow Cryo/Cuff is a specialized medical device that combines focal compression with cold therapy. It is designed to minimize swelling and pain in the elbow area. The system consists of a cuff, a cooler, and a tube, working together to deliver consistent cold therapy as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Safety Precautions
- Risk of Injury: This device can become cold enough to cause serious injury, including tissue necrosis. Always check the skin condition under the cuff frequently.
- Monitoring: Patient skin condition must be checked every 1-2 hours. Special caution is required for children, the elderly, incapacitated patients, and those with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or poor circulation.
- Barrier Use: Always apply a barrier (such as a cloth or bandage) between the cuff and the skin. Do not wrap the cuff tightly.
- Moisture: If moisture appears on the cuff, discontinue use immediately.
- Pressure: Do not raise the cooler more than 38 cm (15 inches) above the cuff to avoid excessive pressure.
Setup and Application
- Cooler Preparation: Connect the blue tube to the cooler. Fill with water to the line, then add ice to the top. Place the insulation disk on the ice and secure the lid. Allow 5 minutes for the water to chill, shaking occasionally.
- Applying the Cuff: Orient the cuff with the quick-disconnect pointing downward. Secure the straps loosely, slide the arm into the cuff, position it over the elbow, and tighten the straps snugly.
- Filling the Cuff: Connect the blue tube to the cuff until it clicks. Open the air vent on the cooler lid and raise the cooler no more than 38 cm above the cuff for 30 seconds to fill. Close the air vent.
Maintenance and Cleaning
After each use, completely drain the water from the cuff, tube, and cooler. Store the cooler with the lid off to allow it to dry. Periodically clean the system by circulating a mixture of hot water and liquid soap through the cooler and cuff, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Troubleshooting and Disposal
If you experience increased pain, burning, numbness, tingling, or skin changes, stop using the device immediately and contact your physician. The device is intended for single-patient use only. Dispose of the product according to local regulations.
