This manual provides essential instructions for the Bosch GDR 18V-215 and GDX 18V-285 cordless impact drivers. It covers safety, assembly, operation, and maintenance. Always ensure the battery is removed before performing any maintenance or tool changes to prevent accidental activation.
Device Description
The tools feature a tool holder, worklight, rotational direction switch, belt clip, and a user interface for speed and mode selection. The GDX 18V-285 includes a dual tool holder (internal hexagon and external square).
Assembly
Inserting the battery: Slide the charged battery into the holder until it clicks into place. Inserting the application tool: Pull the locking sleeve forward, insert the tool into the holder until it stops, and release the sleeve to lock it. For the GDX 18V-285, slide the tool onto the square drive.
Operation
Rotational direction: Use the switch to change direction. Right rotation for driving screws/tightening nuts; left rotation for loosening. Speed/Impact rate: Regulate speed by varying the pressure on the on/off switch. Switching on/off: Press and hold the on/off switch to start; release to stop. The worklight remains on for approx. 15 seconds after release.
User Interface
The interface allows for speed preselection (2 stages) and selection of predefined working modes. Use the mode button to switch between modes like Auto Slow-down (wood), Auto Shut-off (metal), or ABR (Automatic Shutdown for nuts, GDX 18V-285 only).

Maintenance
Regularly clean the air vents and the tool holder/locking sleeve. Keep the tool and ventilation slots clean for safe and efficient operation.

Common problems
Check if the battery is charged and correctly inserted. If the battery charge indicator does not light up, the battery may be defective.
Ensure the tool is correctly inserted and locked in the tool holder. For GDX 18V-285, ensure it is firmly seated on the square drive.
If operating time is significantly reduced after charging, the battery is worn out and must be replaced.
Before use
- Ensure the battery is fully charged.
- Check that the correct bit or socket is selected for the task.
- Verify the rotational direction switch is in the desired position.
- Ensure the tool holder and locking sleeve are clean.
- Check that the workpiece is securely clamped.
Specs in practice
- Max. tightening torque
- The maximum force the tool can apply to tighten a screw or nut.
- No-load speed
- The rotational speed of the tool without any load applied.
