Overview

This technical service bulletin addresses a specific high-pitched whine noise reported in 2020 Ford F-150, Mustang, and Ranger vehicles equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. The issue typically occurs at low speeds during light acceleration or coasting, specifically in 3rd gear. The noise is attributed to the outer output shaft bearing.

Diagnostic Procedure

To confirm the condition, perform a road test at normal operating temperature. Use the Automatic Transmission Select Shift feature to select and hold 3rd gear while driving on flat ground. The noise should peak at speeds between 30-40 km/h (18-25 mph) and disappear when the transmission is shifted into NEUTRAL. If the noise is not present under these conditions, this bulletin does not apply.

Repair Procedure

The repair involves replacing the transmission inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve, and outer output shaft bearing. This is a complex procedure requiring the removal and partial disassembly of the transmission. Technicians must refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 307-01 for detailed disassembly and assembly steps. It is not necessary to remove all internal components; only the torque converter, auxiliary pump, main control assembly, speed sensors, fluid pump, output shaft seal, front support, clutch and planetary assembly, and the output shaft/planetary carrier No. 4 assembly need to be removed to access the affected bearings.
