ECM Update for P2096 and Misfire DTCs (14-FL-006)

Overview

This technical service bulletin provides instructions for an ECM software update on 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra (MD/UD) vehicles. The update is designed to revise diagnostic logic for specific trouble codes, including P2096 (Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System too Lean) and P0301/2/3/4 (Cylinder Misfire detected).

General Precautions

Before performing the update, ensure the GDS laptop battery is charged to at least 50%. Turn off all vehicle accessories, including lights, heater, air conditioning, and audio systems to prevent battery discharge. The ignition must be in the ON position throughout the process. Do not disconnect any cables or turn off the ignition during the update.

GDS Auto Mode Procedure

• Connect the GDS to the vehicle using the VCI and 16-pin DLC connector.
• From the GDS home page, select ECU Upgrade and choose the vehicle VIN.
• Select Engine as the system and proceed with Auto Mode.
• The system will read the current ROM ID. Verify it matches the applicable ROM ID listed in the technical documentation.
• Select the update event 330 (UD/MD 1.8MPI ENGINE DTC P2096 IMPROVEMENT) and initiate the upgrade.
• Once the progress bar reaches 100%, turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds, then back ON to complete the process.
• Clear all stored DTCs after the update and verify engine operation.

Manual Mode Recovery

If the Auto Mode update fails, a Manual Mode procedure is available. This requires disconnecting the ECM connectors for 15 minutes to reset the module. When performing a manual update, it is critical to identify the correct ECM part number from the physical label on the unit to select the appropriate password from the provided reference table. Failure to document a manual update attempt may result in warranty claim issues.
