Quick guide from the manual
This document provides essential instructions for the operation, installation, and maintenance of Aprilaire 1830, 1850, and 1850W whole-home dehumidifiers. The unit is designed to control indoor humidity levels by drawing air through a filter, removing moisture via a refrigeration system, and discharging dry air back into the home or HVAC system.
Setting the desired humidity level
The on-board control allows you to set the relative humidity (RH) between 40% and 80%. The recommended initial setting is 55% RH. Allow the unit to run until it reaches the setting before making further adjustments. If the air feels too damp, decrease the setting; if it feels too dry, increase it.
Maintenance
Clean or replace the air filter: The air filter should be checked and cleaned every 6 months. A service reminder will appear on the display. To clean: turn the unit off, remove the filter access door, slide out the filter, wash with warm water and mild detergent, shake off excess water, and reinstall. Press the UP and DOWN buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to clear the service message.
Check the drain: The drain system should be checked annually for blockages or air locks to ensure proper drainage.
Troubleshooting
The unit displays diagnostic codes (E1–E9) if service is required. For example, E8 indicates the incoming air temperature is outside the operating range (50°F–104°F) or the dew point is below 40°F. If the unit does not turn on, check the power supply, the ON/OFF switch, and the circuit breaker.
Safety
Installation and service must be performed by a qualified technician. Always disconnect electrical power before servicing. Do not use the unit in pool applications, as pool chemicals can damage the dehumidifier.

Common problems
Check if the unit is plugged in, the power switch is ON, the control is ON, and the circuit breaker has not tripped.
Check and clean/replace the air filter, check for blocked ductwork, and ensure the backflow damper is not stuck.
Check for float switch activation, coil frosting (due to low airflow), or inlet air temperature outside the 50°F–104°F range.
Incoming air temperature is below 50°F or above 104°F, or dew point is below 40°F. Verify all ductwork is properly sealed.
Before use
- Ensure the unit is installed by a qualified service technician.
- Cut the strap securing the compressor shipping support bracket and remove the bracket.
- Ensure the unit is level to allow proper drainage.
- Verify the air filter is installed correctly.
- If the unit was not stored upright, wait 24 hours before running it.
Specs in practice
- Operating Current
- Electrical draw required for the unit (6.3A for Model 1830, 8A for Model 1850/1850W).
- External Static Pressure
- Maximum resistance the HVAC system can have for proper airflow (0.4" w.c. for 1830, 0.6" w.c. for 1850/1850W).
Model compatibility
- Recommended external controls: Aprilaire Model 76, 8620, or 8910.
