Quick guide from the manual
This document provides essential instructions for the Bosch GKE 18V-40 cordless chainsaw. It covers safe operation, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Always read the full safety instructions before use.
Assembly
Mounting the chain bar and tensioning the saw chain:
- Place the chainsaw on a level surface with the cover (14) facing upwards.
- Remove the cover (14) by unscrewing the two fastening nuts (15) using the provided assembly tool (13).
- Hold the chain bar (11) with the nose pointing vertically upwards and attach the saw chain (12) in the correct direction (see figure B1).
- Adjust the guide pin (10) to the left by rotating the chain tensioning screw (7) anti-clockwise.
- Fit the saw chain around the drive sprocket (3) and slide the chain bar (11) over the fastening bolts (8).
- Replace the cover (14) and tighten the fastening nuts (15) by hand.
- Use the assembly tool (13) to turn the chain tensioning screw (7) clockwise until the chain is tensioned. The correct tension is achieved when the chain (12) can be lifted approx. 6-7 mm from the chain bar (11).
- Tighten the fastening nuts (15) securely.
Operation
Filling the oil reservoir:
The chainsaw is not supplied filled with oil. It is essential to fill it with Bosch biodegradable chain saw oil (Part number: F 016 800 642) before use. Operating without oil will damage the chain bar and saw chain.
Switching On and Off:
- Switching on: Pull the kickback brake lever (5) from position 2 to position 1 towards the front handle (4). Press the lock-off button (19), then press and hold the On/Off switch (2).
- Switching off: Release the On/Off switch (2). After use, push the kickback brake lever (5) forward to position 2.
Maintenance and Cleaning
- Always remove the battery before cleaning or maintenance.
- Regularly check the chain saw for obvious defects such as a loose, dislodged, or damaged saw chain.
- Clean the chain bar and saw chain before storing the product for an extended period to prevent parts from seizing.
- Use a clean cloth or stiff brush to remove debris from the oil outlet (6).
Troubleshooting
If the chainsaw does not operate properly, check the following:
- Chain saw fails to operate: Check if the kickback brake is activated, the battery is charged, or if the motor protector has activated.
- Saw chain dry: Check the oil level and ensure the oil outlet (6) or oil filter is not clogged.
- Saw chain/guide bar hot: Check the oil level and chain tension.
