Quick guide from the manual

This document provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of the Bosch GSA 18V-28 Professional reciprocating saw. Always read the full safety instructions provided in the original manual before use.

Device Description

The GSA 18V-28 is a cordless reciprocating saw designed for cutting wood, plastic, metal, and building materials on a firm surface. It is suitable for straight and curved cuts. When using appropriate bi-metal saw blades, flush cutting is also possible.

Assembly

Removing the battery: Always remove the battery before performing any work on the tool (e.g., maintenance, changing tools, transport, or storage) to prevent accidental activation.

Inserting/changing the saw blade:

  • Wear protective gloves when handling saw blades, as they are sharp and can become hot.
  • Ensure the saw blade receptacle is free of material residue (e.g., wood or metal chips).
  • Use only saw blades with a 1/2" universal shank.
  • Push the saw blade (1) firmly into the receptacle (4) until it audibly engages. The locking sleeve (3) will rotate approx. 90° and lock the blade.
  • If the blade does not lock, rotate the locking sleeve (3) approx. 90° in the direction of the arrow until it locks in the open position, then insert the blade again.
  • Check that the blade is securely seated by pulling on it.

Operation

Switching On/Off: Press the lock-off switch (7) to the left, then press and hold the on/off switch (8). To switch off, release the on/off switch (8) and press the lock-off switch (7) to the right.

Controlling the stroke rate: The stroke rate can be variably adjusted by pressing the on/off switch (8) to varying extents.

Operating modes: Use the orbital action adjusting lever (9) to switch pendulum action on or off. Switch it on for soft/medium materials (e.g., wood, plastic) and off for clean cuts in thin or hard materials (e.g., sheet metal, steel).

Working Advice

  • Plunge cutting: Only for soft materials like wood or gypsum board. Do not plunge cut metal.
  • Flush sawing: Use elastic bi-metal saw blades to cut protruding elements (e.g., water pipes) directly at the wall. Ensure the blade is longer than the workpiece diameter to avoid kickback.
  • Utility hook: Use the hook (6) to hang the tool (e.g., on a ladder). Ensure the blade is protected from accidental contact when hung.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Always keep the tool and ventilation slots clean for safe operation. Clean the saw blade receptacle with a soft cloth or brush. If the tool becomes very dirty, it may lead to functional faults; avoid cutting materials that generate large quantities of dust from below or overhead.

Practical help

Common problems

Saw blade does not lock in place

Rotate the locking sleeve (3) approx. 90° in the direction of the arrow until it locks in the open position, then re-insert the blade.

Tool overheats during prolonged low-stroke operation

Remove the saw blade and run the tool at maximum stroke rate for approximately 3 minutes to cool down.

Saw blade jams in the workpiece

Switch off the tool immediately. Widen the sawing gap slightly with a suitable tool and pull the tool out.

Before use

  • Check the workpiece for foreign objects like nails or screws.
  • Ensure the saw blade is suitable for the material.
  • Ensure the battery is fully charged.
  • Check that the saw blade is securely locked in the receptacle.
  • Ensure the footplate is adjusted correctly for the application.
