Quick guide from the manual

The Draper Tools 13818-501G is a multi-purpose detector designed to locate metal objects, live electrical wiring, and wooden wall studs. This device is intended for use as a guide only; always exercise caution when working in walls or blind surfaces. The device requires a 9V PP3 battery for operation.

Product Overview

The unit features two detection faces: one for stud detection and one for voltage/metal detection. It includes sensitivity dials for both modes, a selector switch, and LED indicators (red/green) accompanied by an audible buzzer to signal detections.

Operation and Use

Before use, install a 9V PP3 battery. Ensure the device is not near metal objects or current-carrying conductors when switching it on.

AC Voltage and Metal Detection

  • Rotate the voltage/metal sensitivity dial fully downwards.
  • Set the selector switch to the AC Voltage/Metal Detector position.
  • Rotate the sensitivity dial upwards until the indicator illuminates and the buzzer sounds, then reverse the dial slightly until they switch off.
  • Hold the device flush against the wall and move it sideways.
  • Constant LED/tone indicates metal; intermittent LED/tone indicates live wiring.

Wood Frame Detection

  • Hold the device flush against the wall and set the selector switch to the Stud Detector position.
  • Rotate the stud sensitivity dial fully downwards.
  • Turn the dial until the red indicator illuminates and the tone sounds, then reverse until the green indicator illuminates and the tone stops.
  • Move the unit horizontally across the wall. The red indicator and tone will trigger at the edge of a stud.

Maximizing Accuracy

To pinpoint the exact location of an object, perform an initial sweep to find the approximate area. Adjust the sensitivity dial slightly downwards and sweep again. Repeat until the indicator is no longer activated, then adjust the dial slightly upwards for a final, precise sweep.

Unit Adjustment

The device is calibrated at the factory. Only adjust the internal trimmers if the device does not function as expected. Use the provided small screwdriver (located on the back of the battery cover) to rotate the trimmers with extreme care. Improper adjustment may void the warranty.

Cleaning and Storage

Clean the device regularly with a dry cloth. Never use aggressive chemicals. Remove the battery if storing the device for extended periods and keep it in a clean, dry location out of reach of children.

Safety Information

  • Do not immerse the device in water.
  • Do not use if the device is damaged or shows signs of battery leakage.
  • The device emits a loud tone; avoid placing the buzzer openings directly against your ear.
  • Always test the device on a known voltage source before testing unknown surfaces.

Common problems

Device indicates voltage in a wall where none should exist.

The device is highly sensitive and may be triggered by low currents or poor insulation in damp walls. Investigate as a potential hazard.

Inaccurate readings near studs or battens.

Nails or screws in the stud may cause anomalous readings. Take several readings along the length of the object to improve reliability.

Device loses contact with the wall during stud detection.

The green indicator will go out if contact is lost; the procedure must be repeated from the beginning.

Before use

  • Install a 9V PP3 battery.
  • Check the device for physical damage or battery leakage.
  • Ensure the device is not near metal or live wires when switching on.
  • Test the device on a known voltage source before use.
  • Ensure the detection face is flush with the wall surface.

Specs in practice

Maximum wood detecting depth

Model compatibility

  • Cannot detect shielded current conductors (e.g., in metal conduit).
  • Metallic fibers in fireproofing or foil-backed plasterboard may cause incorrect readings.
  • Multiple adjacent studs may cause the device to function incorrectly.
