Toyota Technical Service Bulletin: Brake Pad Clicking Noise
A technical service guide for addressing brake pad clicking noises in Toyota vehicles (1990-2000) by applying specific disc brake caliper grease to reduce pad-to-caliper clearance movement.
Table of contents
Quick guide from the manual
This technical service bulletin addresses a clicking noise heard when changing vehicle travel direction (e.g., from Drive to Reverse). This is caused by normal brake pad-to-caliper clearances. The procedure involves applying a specific disc brake caliper grease (Part Number 08887-80609) to contact points to minimize this movement. This grease is effective for 6 months to 1 year under normal conditions.
Safety and Application Warnings
- Do NOT apply grease to the friction surfaces of the brake pads or the disc rotor.
- Always clean excess grease from the brake pads and caliper after application.
- Do not disconnect the flexible brake hose from the caliper during the procedure.
Floating Type Brake Caliper Procedure
- Lift or remove the brake caliper and suspend it securely.
- Remove anti-squeal springs, brake pads, and anti-squeal shims.
- Remove and clean pad support plates, torque plates, and brake pads.
- Apply 1-2 mm of grease to both sides of the pad support plates.
- If the support plate is fixed with adhesive tape, follow the specific flow chart provided in the manual to determine if the plate needs to be removed or if grease should be applied directly to the contact area.
- Apply 1-2 mm of grease to the caliper as indicated in the diagrams.
- Reinstall components and press the piston in firmly before reattaching the caliper.
Fixed Type Brake Caliper Procedure
Identify your brake pad type:
- Type A: Features a projection on the upper and lower side of the brake pad.
- Type B: Features a flat upper and lower edge on the backing plate.
For both types, the procedure involves removing the retaining clips, pins, and springs, cleaning the pads, and applying 1-2 mm of grease to the specific contact areas shown in the manual illustrations. Ensure all clips and springs are reinstalled correctly after applying the grease.
Practical help
Common problems
Apply disc brake caliper grease to pad contact points to reduce clearance movement.
Do not apply grease to brake pad friction surfaces or the disc rotor; clean any excess immediately.
Before use
- Verify vehicle model year (1990-2000)
- Identify brake caliper type (Floating or Fixed)
- Identify brake pad type (Type A or Type B)
- Obtain Disc Brake Caliper Grease (Part No. 08887-80609)
- Ensure vehicle is safely lifted and wheel assembly is removed
Specs in practice
- Grease thickness
- Apply 1-2 mm thick layer to specified contact points.
- Grease longevity
- Effective for 6 months to 1 year under normal usage.
Model compatibility
- Applicable to all Toyota vehicle models from 1990 to 2000.
