Table of contents
Quick guide from the manual
This guide covers the installation and adjustment of Giant MTB clipless pedals. Before riding, it is essential to practice engaging and disengaging your shoes on a stationary bike until the motion becomes natural. Beginners should set the binding tension to the minimum level to ensure easier release in traffic or emergency situations.
Assembly to crank arms
Giant MTB clipless pedals feature 9/16" x 20T threaded spindles. Follow these steps for installation:
- Identify the pedals: The right pedal is marked with an R, and the left pedal is marked with an L.
- Assemble the pedals in a clockwise direction.
- Use a 15mm wrench or a 6mm Allen key to tighten the pedals.
- Recommended torque is 34Nm (340 kgf/cm).
Cleat installation
The supplied cleats are compatible with standard SPD cycling shoes and provide 4 degrees of lateral float to relieve knee stress.
- Use the provided bolts and washers to attach the cleats to the bolt receiver holes in the shoes.
- Align the lateral center line of the cleat under the center of the ball of the foot.
- Adjust the cleat position vertically via the slots in the shoe sole.
- Tighten the bolts firmly using a 4mm Allen key.
Binding tension adjustment
You can adjust the binding tension to customize how easily the shoe engages and disengages from the pedal:
- Locate the tension adjustment bolt in the spring cavity of the pedal.
- Use a 3mm Allen key to make adjustments.
- Turn clockwise (+) to increase tension for a more secure hold but more difficult engagement/disengagement.
- Turn counter-clockwise (-) to decrease tension for easier engagement/disengagement.
- Ensure tension is equal on both pedals for uniform performance.
Pedal usage
Engaging: Push the cleated shoe forward and down into the pedal until the rear binding engages.
Disengaging: Twist your heel outward, away from the bicycle, to release the cleat.
Maintenance and safety
- Keep pedals and cleats clean to ensure proper function.
- Lubricate the spring mechanism occasionally to prevent rust and seizure.
- Service the pedals every 6 months.
- Replace bearings if you feel roughness or hear noise during rotation.
- Replace pedals immediately if they show signs of fractures or if parts are worn/damaged.
- Do not overtighten the tension adjustment bolts, as this may damage the threads.
Practical help
Common problems
Adjust the binding tension using a 3mm Allen key. Turn counter-clockwise (-) to decrease tension for easier release.
The bearings may require service or replacement. Ensure the pedals are kept clean and lubricated.
Replace cleats immediately if they are badly worn or damaged to ensure safe engagement.
Before use
- Verify pedals are marked R (right) and L (left) and installed on the correct side.
- Tighten crank arm bolts to the recommended 34Nm torque.
- Ensure cleats are tightened firmly to the shoes using a 4mm Allen key.
- Practice engaging and disengaging on a stationary bike with one foot on the ground.
- Set binding tension to the minimum level for beginners.
