Product Overview

The horizont Ranger Fence Digital Voltmeter (Type 14496C) is a precision tool designed to measure the voltage of electric fencing systems. It accurately detects voltage pulses ranging from 200 to 9,900 volts. Any pulses exceeding 10,000 volts are indicated on the display as HI. The device is powered by a 9-volt battery, which is included, and features an automatic on/off function for ease of use.

Operation and Measurement

To perform a measurement, connect the device between the earth (using the earth post) and the fence (using the contact ear). According to VDE standards, voltage levels above 2,000 volts are considered safe and effective for electric fencing. Higher voltage readings generally indicate a more secure and functional system.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

The voltmeter is an essential tool for identifying common fencing issues:

• Voltage at the Earth Post: If a voltage is measurable at the earth post, it indicates either leaks in the fencing system or poor earth conductivity. To resolve this, inspect the fence for shorts and improve the grounding by installing additional earth rods in humid soil.
• Faulty Insulators: The device can detect damaged insulators on iron posts. By measuring the voltage at different posts, the one with the lowest or no reading is likely the source of the fault. Arcing at these points acts as a voltage limiter, causing the potential to drop.

High-voltage and high-energy impulses require a robust fence construction. The use of iron posts is generally discouraged unless they are equipped with specialized, high-quality insulators. Vegetation growth and arcing at insulators or metal posts can significantly reduce fence voltage, increase power consumption, and lead to measurable voltage at the earth post.
