Quick Guide from the Manual
The LANCOM 1640E is a high-performance VPN router. Before initial startup, ensure the power plug is freely accessible. If placing the device on a desktop, attach the provided adhesive rubber footpads. Ensure all ventilation slots on the side of the device remain clear of obstructions. Do not place objects on top of the device. For wall mounting, use the provided drilling template.
Hardware Overview
The rear panel of the device includes the following interfaces:

- WAN interface: Connect to your WAN modem using the enclosed ethernet cable with dark green connectors.
- Ethernet interface (ETH 1-3): Use the cable with kiwi-colored connectors to connect to your PC or LAN switch.
- Configuration interface: Serial configuration interface (requires optional cable).
- USB interface: Connect USB printers or storage devices.
- Reset button: Press up to 5 seconds to restart; press until all LEDs flash to reset configuration.
- Power: Connect the power adapter and turn the bayonet connector 90° clockwise to secure.
LED Status Indicators
The front panel LEDs provide status information:
- Power: Green (operational), Red/Green blinking (password not set), Red blinking (hardware error).
- Online: Green (WAN connection active), Red (WAN connection error).
- WAN: Green (connection established), Orange (synchronizing).
- ETH: Green (link/data transmission).
- VPN: Green (VPN connection active).

Practical help
Common problems
Check the power adapter connection and ensure the bayonet connector is locked (90° clockwise turn).
If the Power LED is blinking red/green, the configuration password is not set. Set a password to protect device data.
If the Online LED is permanently red, check the modem connection and the cable integrity.
If the Power LED is blinking red, a hardware error has occurred.
