Quick guide from the manual

The Posey Roll Belt is designed to secure patients to a hospital bed or stretcher to limit unassisted exits while allowing for side-to-side movement or sitting up. This document provides application instructions for two configurations: Increased Movement and Decreased Movement. Always follow your facility's restraint policies and ensure compliance with local regulations.

Application Instructions: Increased Movement

  1. Open the belt and center it across the mattress with the flannel side facing the patient's back.
  2. Position the patient in bed at waist level.
  3. Secure the short strap to a moving part of the bed frame using a quick-release tie or buckle, out of the patient's reach.
  4. Bring the long strap around the patient's waist and back, threading it through the slot in the back pad.
  5. Secure the long strap to a moving part of the bed frame. Ensure the belt is snug but does not interfere with breathing; verify by sliding a flat hand between the belt and the patient.
  6. Confirm straps are secure and will not shift if the patient pulls or the bed is adjusted.

Application Instructions: Decreased Movement

  1. Open the belt and center it across the patient's abdomen with the flannel side facing the patient.
  2. Bring the long strap around the patient's waist and through the front slot.
  3. Position the patient in bed at waist level.
  4. Secure the short strap to a moving part of the bed frame using a quick-release tie or buckle, out of the patient's reach.
  5. Secure the long strap to a moving part of the bed frame. Verify fit by sliding a flat hand between the belt and the patient.
  6. Confirm straps are secure and will not shift.

Safety and Warnings

Important: Never secure straps to side rails or head/footboards. Always attach to a part of the frame that moves with the patient. Improper application can lead to serious injury or death. Constant monitoring may be required for aggressive patients or those in a supine position. Never use this product as a seat belt in a vehicle or on furniture not designed for this application.

Laundering and Maintenance

  • Fasten all buckles and locks before washing. Use a laundry bag for maximum life.
  • For stainless steel locks, apply a dryfilm silicone lubricant after cleaning.
  • Machine wash non-foam products according to CDC guidelines for soiled items. Use lower temperatures for non-contaminated items.
  • Ensure products are completely dry before reuse.
  • Inspect before each use for frayed material, broken stitches, or faulty fasteners. Discard if damaged.

How to Tie the Posey Quick-Release Tie

  1. Wrap the strap around the moving frame, leaving at least an 8-inch (20 cm) tail. Fold the loose end to create a loop and cross it over the other end.
  2. Insert the folded strap through the cross-over point like a shoelace and pull to tighten.
  3. Fold the loose end to create a second loop.
  4. Insert the second loop into the first loop and pull to tighten.
  5. Test the knot to ensure it releases with a single pull on the loose end.

Practical help

Common problems

Straps loosen or shift during use

Ensure straps are secured to a part of the frame that moves with the patient and re-test after any bed adjustment.

Hook-and-loop fasteners losing grip

Remove lint using a stiff-bristle brush and ensure the hook and loop are fastened together before laundering.

Stainless steel lock stiffness

Apply a small amount of dryfilm silicone lubricant into the lock and work the mechanism with a key.

Before use

  • Inspect for broken stitches, torn or frayed material.
  • Check that locks, buckles, and fasteners hold securely.
  • Ensure the patient is wearing proper undergarments to protect skin.
  • Verify the belt is not too tight; you should be able to slide a flat hand between the belt and the patient.
  • Confirm the attachment point moves with the patient (not a side rail or head/footboard).

Model compatibility

  • For use in licensed healthcare facilities only.
  • Not for home use.
  • Not designed as a vehicle seat belt.
  • Requires clinical assessment for patients with surgical sites, ostomies, or tubes.
