Quick guide from the manual
This document provides installation instructions for the SW-MOTECH Kobra handguard kit. Proper installation requires technical knowledge; if you are unsure, have the kit installed by a professional workshop. Always use medium-strength liquid thread locker on screws as indicated. After installation, ensure all handlebar controls (throttle, brake, clutch) operate freely and correctly. Check all screw connections after the first 50 km.
Mounting procedure
The installation is performed in several stages:
- Handlebar preparation: Remove existing handlebar end weights. Loosen speedometer unit screws if necessary to create clearance.
- Handlebar clamps: Loosely mount the handlebar clamps (1) with connectors (2) and (3) to the handlebar.
- Backbones: Attach the threaded adapters (9) to the handlebar ends using thread locker. Attach the backbones (7) and (8) to the adapters and the connectors. Do not fully tighten yet.
- Final positioning: Position the backbones for optimal ergonomics. Tighten all screws in the specified order (13, 10, 4, 5) using the required torque settings.
- Handguard shells: Attach the Kobra handguard shells (1 & 2) to the backbones using the provided screws. Tighten carefully by hand (max 2 Nm) to avoid stripping threads.
Safety and maintenance
Ensure that the brake hose does not rub or get pinched. If necessary, have a qualified specialist adjust the banjo bolt angle to ensure clearance. Verify that the handlebar can turn fully in both directions without contacting the tank or other components. Regularly check the tightness of all screw connections.
Technical specifications
The kit includes various screws and adapters. Use medium-strength thread locker for all indicated connections. Torque values for M8 screws are typically 20-21 Nm, while M6 screws are 10 Nm. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications if specific torque values are provided for your motorcycle model.
Practical help
Common problems
Ensure all cables and hoses are not pinched or rubbing. Adjust the position of the handguards or the brake hose banjo bolt if necessary.
Check for contact between the handguards and the fuel tank or fairing. Adjust the handlebar clamp or backbone position to provide clearance.
Tighten the screws attaching the shells to the backbones carefully by hand, with a maximum torque of 2 Nm.
