This document provides operating instructions for the Güde GAB 12V/6V-10A (85142) and GAB 12V-15A (85143) automatic battery chargers. These devices are designed for charging and starting vehicles. Always read the full safety instructions before use.
Safety instructions
- The device is intended for use by persons aged 16 or older.
- Children aged 8 and above may use the device under supervision or if instructed on safe use.
- Do not use the charger in moist or wet conditions; for indoor use only.
- Ensure cooling slots are not covered.
- Do not operate near heat sources or on flammable surfaces.
- Always disconnect from the mains before connecting or disconnecting battery cables.
- Battery charging produces explosive gases; avoid fire, sparks, and smoking.
- Wear protective goggles and gloves.
Charging procedure
- Connect the red battery clip to the positive (+) terminal.
- Connect the black battery clip to the negative (-) terminal (if mounted in the vehicle, connect to the chassis, away from the battery and fuel line).
- Plug the charger into a mains socket.
- After charging, disconnect the charger from the mains.
- Remove the black clip from the chassis/negative terminal, then the red clip from the positive terminal.
Charging steps and error codes
The charger automatically adapts the charging line through six steps: Diagnosis, Soft Start, Bulk, Absorption, Analysis, and Maintenance. If an error occurs, the display will show an error code:
- E01: Charger temperature too high.
- E02: No-load or battery voltage too low.
- E03: 6V mode selected for 12V battery.
- E04: Battery cannot hold charge (defective).
- E05: Battery did not reach threshold (defective).
- E06: Reverse connection.
- P12: Cigarette lighter active.
Maintenance and disposal
Keep connection clamps and the battery surface clean. Clean only with a dry cloth. Do not dispose of the device or batteries with household waste; use designated recycling collection points.

Common problems
Reverse connection detected. Check that the red clip is on the positive (+) terminal and the black clip is on the negative (-) terminal.
6V charging mode is selected for a 12V battery. Change the mode.
The battery is likely defective and cannot hold a charge or reach the required threshold.

- Ensure the device is not damaged (cables, plug).
- Ensure the vehicle is switched off and the ignition is off.
- Ensure the area is well-ventilated.
- Wear protective goggles and gloves.
- Check that the battery type is compatible (Lead-acid, Gel, AGM, WET, MF).
