Quick Guide from the Manual

The Blackstar ST. JAMES 100 is a high-performance tube amplifier designed for flexibility and intuitive use. This manual covers the hardware operation for both the Head and Combo versions. Before operating, ensure the amplifier is placed on a stable surface with adequate ventilation. The unit features a universal power supply (100-240Vac), making it suitable for international travel.

Front Panel Controls

The front panel provides control over four channels: CLEAN, CRUNCH, OD 1, and OD 2.

Front Panel Layout
Front Panel Layout
  • INPUT: Connect your guitar here. The amp enters a low-power silent mode if no jack is inserted.
  • CLEAN/CRUNCH: Selects between the CLEAN and CRUNCH channels.
  • OD 1/OD 2: Selects between the two overdrive channels.
  • EQ Controls: BASS, MIDDLE, TREBLE, and PRESENCE controls are provided for tone shaping. These are dual potentiometers that function differently for each channel type.
  • BOOST/TIGHT Switches: Provide additional tonal shaping for the CRUNCH and OD 2 channels respectively.
  • POWER Control: Allows precise control over the power amp headroom, scaling from 100% down to 5%.

Rear Panel Features

The rear panel handles connectivity for speakers, recording, and external control.

Rear Panel Layout
Rear Panel Layout
  • SPEAKER OUTPUTS: Connect your speaker cabinets here. Ensure correct impedance matching (1x16 Ohm or 1x8 Ohm/2x16 Ohm).
  • STBY Switch: Selects between 'I' (normal operation) and SILENT mode. In SILENT mode, the internal reactive load is engaged, allowing for silent recording via CabRig outputs.
  • CabRig: Provides authentic cabinet, speaker, and room simulation. Outputs include XLR D.I., Line Out/Phones, and USB Audio.
  • EFFECTS LOOP: Features a switchable series/parallel routing and a level switch (+4dBu/-10dBV) for compatibility with professional or pedal-level gear.
  • MIDI & Footswitch: Supports MIDI control and connection for the supplied FS-23 6-way footswitch or a standard 2-way latching footswitch.

Maintenance and Safety

Always replace damaged fuses with the correct rating and type as specified on the rear panel. Do not open the equipment case; there are no user-serviceable parts inside. If the amplifier does not operate normally, refer to a qualified service engineer.

Common problems

No sound from speakers

Check speaker cable connections, ensure the STBY switch is not in SILENT mode, and verify the Master volume is turned up.

Harsh high frequencies

Adjust the CUT switch on the rear panel to progressively remove extreme high frequencies.

Effects loop signal issues

Ensure the LEVEL switch is set correctly (+4dBu for pro gear, -10dBV for pedals) and check if the loop is set to PARALLEL or SERIES.

Before use

  • Ensure the amplifier is placed on a stable surface.
  • Check that ventilation openings are not blocked.
  • Connect the appropriate speaker cabinet to the correct impedance output.
  • Ensure the mains voltage is compatible (universal supply 100-240Vac).
