Corning 012EB4-14101A20 ROC Drop and SST-Drop Cable Access Guide

A comprehensive technical guide for prepping and stripping Corning ROC Drop and SST-Drop fiber optic cables, including safety precautions, tool requirements, and step-by-step access procedures.

Table of contents

Quick guide from the manual

This document provides standard recommended procedures for prepping and stripping Corning ROC Drop and SST-Drop fiber optic cables. It covers essential steps for accessing fibers, handling optional toning wires, and performing hardware placement. Always consult the specific cable and hardware documentation for recommended bend radii and pulling force limits.

Safety Precautions

  • Eye Protection: Wear ANSI Z87-compliant safety glasses. Glass fiber shards are sharp and can cause serious eye damage.
  • Laser Safety: Never look directly into the end of a fiber that may be carrying laser light. Do not use magnifiers in the presence of laser radiation.
  • Chemical Safety: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Ensure proper ventilation and avoid contact with eyes.
  • Handling: Use cut-resistant gloves when working with sharp tools or armored cables. Always cut away from yourself.

ROC Drop Cable Access

Tools Required: ROC Drop cable splitter (RDST-000), electrical tape, tape measure, lint-free tissues, scissors, side cutters, and optionally a cable sheath knife and emery cloth.

Procedure:

  1. Mark the cable at the required strip length with electrical tape.
  2. If an optional toning wire is present, separate it from the optical cable without cutting it.
  3. Use the ROC Drop cable splitter to shave the narrow sides of the jacket (vertical slot #1).
  4. Shave the wide sides of the jacket using the horizontal slot (#2) of the tool.
  5. Separate the GRP strength members and cut them near the tape wrap.
  6. Cut the cable end square and remove the center sheath segments to expose the fiber.

SST-Drop Cable Access

Tools Required: SST-Drop Cable Access Tool (FDST-000), side cutters, electrical tape, tape measure, Fiber-Clean wipes, scissors, coaxial cable stripper, small screwdriver, and lint-free tissues.

Procedure:

  1. Mark the cable end for the required strip length.
  2. Separate the optional toning wire if present.
  3. Use the SST-Drop Cable Access Tool to remove the jacket.
  4. Use a buffer tube cutter to score the tube. Adjust the blade carefully to avoid damaging the fibers inside.
  5. Flex the tube to break it at the score point and slide the section off.
  6. Clean the fibers using Fiber-Clean wipes and alcohol-soaked lint-free tissues.

Cold Weather Buffer Tube Access

In temperatures of 14°F (10°C) and below, the filling compound becomes tacky. Use the red tube splitting tool (p/n A0362957) to split the tube. Take extra care when separating the halves as the fiber will stick to the gel. Use baby powder on the fiber to identify any remaining filling compound residue.

Practical help

Common problems

Difficulty pulling the splitting tool along the cable

Ensure the cable is properly positioned in the tool's slot and the tool is fully closed.

Stripper blade cuts completely through the buffer tube

Reduce the number of rotations when scoring the tube or move to a new trial area at the end of the tube.

Fiber sticking to buffer tube halves in cold weather

Use extreme care when separating the halves and clean the fiber thoroughly with Fiber-Clean wipes and alcohol.

Before use

  • Verify the cable type (ROC Drop or SST-Drop).
  • Consult hardware documentation for specific sheath removal lengths.
  • Ensure all required tools (splitters, cutters, wipes) are available.
  • Wear ANSI Z87-compliant safety glasses.
  • Wear cut-resistant safety gloves.

Specs in practice

Minimum Bend Radius
Consult cable specification sheet; do not exceed to avoid transmission loss.
Fiber Coloring (1-12)
Blue, orange, green, brown, slate, white, red, black, yellow, violet, rose, aqua.
Fiber Coloring (13-24)
Same as 1-12 but with one black ring mark.

Model compatibility

  • ROC Drop cable splitter (RDST-000) is specific to ROC Drop cables.
  • SST-Drop Cable Access Tool (FDST-000) is specific to SST-Drop cables.
  • Red tube splitting tool (A0362957) is required for 2.7-3.0 mm tubes.
