Product Overview

The Permeability Plugging Tester (PPT) is a modified 500 mL HTHP filter press designed for both field and laboratory use. It allows for precise filtration testing of plugging materials without the interference of particle settling. The system is particularly effective at predicting how drilling fluids form low-permeability filter cakes to seal off depleted, under-pressured intervals, thereby helping to prevent differential sticking.

Safety Information

Due to the extreme pressures and temperatures involved, strict adherence to safety protocols is required. Always use a safety shield during testing. The heating jacket, test cell, and valve stems become extremely hot; use protective clothing. Never exceed the 10,000 psi rating. Pressurize only with Carbon Dioxide or Nitrogen; never use oxygen, compressed air, or nitrous oxide. Always inspect O-rings for damage before each test and ensure the safety pin is secured with its lanyard.

Operation and Maintenance

The system utilizes a hydraulic hand pump to apply pressure. Before operation, ensure the cell is properly assembled with the correct O-rings (Viton 75D for up to 400°F, Viton 90D for up to 500°F). During testing, maintain the pressure differential using the pump. After the test, allow the cell to cool completely to room temperature before releasing pressure and disassembling. Regular maintenance includes cleaning all components with soap and water, inspecting threads for debris, and checking the hydraulic system for leaks.
