Quick guide from the manual

The Philips Brilliance CT 16-slice scanner is available in two primary configurations to suit different clinical needs:

Philips Brilliance CT 16-slice scanner system
Philips Brilliance CT 16-slice scanner system
  • 5.0 MHU X-ray tube and 48 kW generator configuration: Designed for routine applications and advanced imaging like CT Colonography, CTA, and pulmonary studies.
  • 8.0 MHU X-ray tube and 60 kW generator configuration: Offers enhanced throughput and enables advanced applications including bariatric imaging.

The system utilizes the Brilliance Workspace on a Dell PC with a high-resolution monitor. Optional features include slave monitors for remote viewing and various clinical software packages.

Gantry and table specifications

The gantry and patient table are designed for precise positioning and efficient scanning:

Standard and optional accessories
Standard and optional accessories
  • Gantry Aperture: 700mm.
  • Rotation Times: Ranges from 0.4s to 2.0s for full 360-degree scans.
  • Gantry Tilt: -30 to +30 degrees with 0.5-degree increments.
  • Patient Table: Supports a vertical range of 578mm to 1028mm.
  • Load Capacity: Standard 450 lbs (204kg); up to 650 lbs (295kg) with optional Bariatric Patient Support.
  • Controls: Available on both the gantry (left/right, front/back) and the operator console.

Clinical applications and scanning modes

The system supports a wide range of standard and optional applications, including:

  • Scanning Modes: Spiral scanning (up to 100 seconds) and Axial scanning (up to 16 contiguous slices).
  • Clinical Enhancements: Includes Bolus Tracking, Spiral Auto Start (SAS), Heartbeat CS Pro for ECG-gated cardiac imaging, and CT Fluoroscopy for interventional procedures.
  • Pulmonary Toolkit: Enables respiratory-gated scanning to minimize motion artifacts.

Dose management

The DoseWise philosophy is integrated into the system to minimize radiation exposure while maintaining image quality:

  • DoseRight ACS: Automatic Current Selection optimizes mAs settings.
  • DoseRight D-DOM and Z-DOM: Dynamic and Longitudinal Dose Modulation adjust tube current based on patient attenuation.
  • Pediatric Protocols: Age and weight-based protocols developed with children's hospitals.

Networking and archiving

The system supports 10/100/1000Mbps network speeds. It is fully DICOM 3.0 compliant, enabling connectivity with scanners, workstations, and printers. It supports IHE requirements for scheduled workflow and other integration profiles.

Site planning

Proper site preparation is critical for system installation:

  • Power Requirements: 200/208/240/380/400/415/480/500 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 100kVA, three-phase distribution source.
  • Environmental Requirements: Gantry room temperature must be 18 to 24 degrees Celsius (64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Humidity should be 35% to 70% non-condensing.
  • Heat Dissipation: Gantry (18,000 BTU/hr), Computer (2,559 BTU/hr), Reconstruction (5,293 BTU/hr).

Practical help

Common problems

Advanced rotation times (0.28s, 0.33s) not available.

These speeds require the 8.0 MHU X-ray tube and 60 kW generator configuration.

Network performance issues.

Philips recommends a minimum of 100Mbps network speed, with 1Gbps preferred, and segmenting the CT network from the rest of the hospital network.

Before use

  • Verify power supply meets 100kVA requirements.
  • Ensure room temperature is maintained between 18°C and 24°C.
  • Confirm network speed is at least 100Mbps.
  • Check that the patient table load does not exceed 450 lbs (or 650 lbs with Bariatric Support).
  • Ensure the gantry room humidity is between 35% and 70% non-condensing.

Specs in practice

Gantry Aperture
700mm opening size for patient access.
Rotation Time
Speed of the gantry rotation; faster times reduce motion artifacts.
Z-position accuracy
Precision of the table movement, rated at ±0.25mm.

Images and diagrams

  • Site planning diagram showing the layout of the exam room and control room with dimensions.
  • Network architecture diagram showing connectivity between the scanner, portal, and hospital network.

Model compatibility

  • Supports DICOM 3.0 communications protocol.
  • Compatible with IHE requirements for DICOM connectivity.
  • Requires specific generator configurations for advanced features like 0.28s rotation.
