Quick guide from the manual
This document provides operating and adjustment instructions for SINGER sewing machine models 12K221, 12K222, 12K223, 12K224, and 12K225. These machines are designed for specialized tasks like tacking coat pads and basting. The recommended maximum operating speed is 600 R.P.M.
Description
The 12K221 features a high arm, flat bed, and horizontal-axis sewing hook. It includes a stop-motion device for instant stopping. Other models in the series offer variations such as auxiliary plungers for stretching pads (12K222) or specialized narrow beds for shoulder pads (12K223, 12K224).
Threading the machine
Place the thread spool on the holder. Pass the thread through the left thread guide, between the tension discs, around the thread controller, over the guide, and through the take-up lever. Finally, guide it through the needle bar guides and the eye of the needle.
Bobbin winding
Fasten the bobbin winder to the table. Place the bobbin on the spindle, pass the thread through the tension bracket, and wind it around the bobbin a few times. Push the winder pulley against the machine belt to start. It will stop automatically when full.
Tension adjustment
For a perfect stitch, both threads should lock in the center of the material. Adjust needle thread tension using the thumb nut at the front of the tension discs. Adjust bobbin thread tension using the screw on the outside of the bobbin case.
Oiling and maintenance
Machines in continuous use should be oiled at least twice daily. Use only Singer-approved Type B or Type D oil. Apply one drop to each designated oiling point. If the machine runs hard, use a little paraffin or benzine to clean the oiling points, then re-oil.
Needles
Models 12K221 through 12K224 use Catalogue No. 4401 (126x1) needles in sizes 12-25. Model 12K225 uses Catalogue No. 3303 (126x3) needles in sizes 12-23.

Practical help
Common problems
Use a little paraffin or benzine in the oiling places, run the machine rapidly for a minute, wipe clean, and re-oil.
Loosen the screw on the tension bracket and move the bracket to the right or left as required, then tighten.
Check needle size and type, ensure thread is smooth, and verify tension settings.
Before use
- Ensure the machine is properly oiled at all designated points.
- Verify the correct needle size and catalogue number for your specific model.
- Check that the thread is smooth and appropriate for the needle size.
- Ensure the bobbin is correctly wound and inserted into the bobbin case.
- Confirm the needle is inserted correctly with the short groove toward the upright part of the arm.
