Machine Overview

The Singer 4423 features various controls for sewing customization:

• Thread Tension Dial: Adjusts the tension of the upper thread.
• Stitch Width & Length Dials: Control the size and density of stitches.
• Pattern Selector Dial: Used to choose the desired stitch pattern.
• Three Needle Position Dial: Allows shifting the needle position to Left, Middle, or Right.
• Reverse Sewing Lever: Used to secure the beginning and end of seams.

Setup and Operation

Connecting to Power

Connect the machine to a power source as illustrated. Use the foot control pedal to regulate sewing speed. Press the main switch to the 'I' position to power on the machine and light.

Winding and Inserting the Bobbin

1. Place the thread spool on the pin and snap it into the thread guide.
2. Wind the thread clockwise around the bobbin winder tension discs.
3. Push the bobbin spindle to the right to wind.
4. To insert, place the bobbin in the case with the thread running counterclockwise, pull through the slit, and draw into the notch.

Threading the Upper Thread

Raise the needle to its highest point and the presser foot to release tension discs. Follow the numbered path on the machine, passing the thread through the upper guide, down the right channel, up the left channel, through the take-up lever, and finally through the needle eye (front to back).

Sewing Instructions

Stitch Selection

Use the Pattern Selector Dial to choose your stitch. Gray patterns are standard, while blue patterns are stretch stitches. Adjust the stitch width and length dials to customize the stitch for your specific project.

Buttonholes

The machine features a 1-step buttonhole function. Attach the buttonhole foot, set the pattern selector to the buttonhole icon, and follow the steps to sew the buttonhole in one cycle.

Maintenance

Inserting and Changing Needles

Change the needle regularly, especially if it shows signs of wear. Loosen the needle clamp screw, insert the new needle with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the screw securely. Ensure the needle is pushed up as far as it will go.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, check the following:

• Upper thread breaks: Rethread the machine, reduce tension, or replace the needle.
• Skipped stitches: Ensure the needle is inserted correctly and is not damaged.
• Needle breaks: Use the correct needle size for the fabric and ensure it is inserted properly.
• Machine jams: Remove the upper thread and bobbin case, then turn the handwheel to remove trapped thread.
