Preparation and Safety

  • Cooling: The exhaust may be very hot. Allow adequate time for the system to cool down before starting disassembly to avoid severe burns.
  • Lubrication: Soak all bolts and rubber hangers in penetrating oil before starting any work.
  • Torque: Always refer to the manufacturer’s service manual for precise torque specifications on all OEM fasteners. The minimum torque for exhaust clamps is 60 ft/lbs.

Removal of OE Exhaust

  1. Remove the spare tire to gain access.
  2. Remove the OE heat shield and hardware. Note that this will be reinstalled later.
  3. Loosen the OE ball socket clamp enough to separate the components.
  4. Remove the 5 OE hangers from the exhaust.
  5. Remove the complete OE exhaust system.
  6. Remove the OE tip bezels (these will not be reused).
  7. Re-install the OE heat shield and spare tire after the OE exhaust is removed.

Cutting the Front Pipes

Warning: It is extremely important that these measurements are accurate, as they will affect fitment. Ensure cuts are as straight as possible.

Cutting the front pipe
Cutting the front pipe
  • Measure the cut points behind the catalytic converters on the front pipes.
  • Drivers side cut: 2 5/16" from the weld.
  • Passenger side cut: 2 3/4" from the weld.
  • Mark the cut points with a marker.
  • Cut each side on your mark and remove the cut section.
  • Use a deburring tool on the cut end of the catalytic converters to ensure they are smooth and free of sharp edges.

Installation Steps

Installing quad tip outlets
Installing quad tip outlets
  1. Install AWE front sections (E13 and E14) with 2.5" clamps. Ensure the outlets are parallel.
  2. Install the AWE H-pipe (E15) over the chassis brace. If fitment is difficult, loosen the ball flange on the front side of the driver-side catalytic converter.
  3. Install the passenger side HR5 section (E18) and driver side HR5 section (E17) using provided clamps.
  4. Install the driver side midpipe (E16) and rotate so the bend points toward the drive shaft.
  5. For long wheel base trucks only: Install the provided long wheel base adapters (E42 and E43).
  6. Install the passenger side axle tube (E20) and driver side axle tube (E19). Ensure the hanger bars are inserted into the OE rubber hangers.
  7. Install the driver side tailpipe (E22) and passenger side tailpipe (E21).
  8. Install the 2 AWE quad tip outlets (E33) using the provided ball socket clamps.
  9. Attach the exhaust tips using the integrated clamp hardware kit (3910-41010). Using anti-seize on the bolt threads is recommended.
  10. Install the exhaust hanger split collar clamps using the included hex wrench.

Final Adjustments

Make final adjustments to the tips to ensure they are positioned correctly. Once the desired positioning is achieved, fully tighten down all clamps. It is recommended to drive the vehicle to allow the exhaust to heat cycle, then check the tips for correct alignment and adjust as needed.

Care and Maintenance

The exhaust volume and sound will settle with usage; 800-1000 miles is required to break-in new exhaust systems. The rear 180Technology resonator has a small drain hole to allow condensation to escape; water drops from this area are normal. Periodically clean exhaust tips with a mild soap and water solution or car wax to maintain the finish, especially in areas prone to road salt.

Practical help

Common problems

Exhaust is not fitting correctly

Most fitment issues are due to improperly adjusted exhaust, including tip fitments and rattling due to chassis contact. Re-adjust the sections.

Incorrect or missing parts

Double-check the parts list for your system and compare them with what you received. Contact AWE support via their contact form.

Before use

  • Inspect all parts for damage or missing items prior to disassembly.
  • Ensure you have received both boxes of parts.
  • Allow the exhaust system to cool down completely.
  • Soak all bolts and rubber hangers in penetrating oil.
  • Have a friend available to assist with the process.
