This manual provides installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for Champion Industrial/Commercial Evaporative Coolers. Before beginning, identify your specific model (75/85, 95, 10/12, or 14/21) and record the serial number. Ensure all electrical work is performed by a qualified electrician and complies with local codes.
Safety Rules
- Always disconnect all electrical power before installing or performing maintenance.
- Ensure the cooler cabinet is properly grounded.
- Do not allow the pump to tip over or become submerged.
- Connect the unit only to the voltage, current, and cycle specified on the motor nameplate.
Installation

Mounting and Ductwork
Ensure the mounting surface is strong enough to support the operating weight of the cooler. Curbs are not provided; the installer is responsible for providing support. For down discharge units, the duct must go inside the opening. For side discharge units, the duct should fit over the 1-inch flange.
Water Connection
Install the overflow assembly by placing the nipple through the pan hole with the rubber washer between the pan and the nipple head. Secure with the nut. Connect a 3/8-inch water supply line to the float valve. Note: Do not use water supplied from a water softener.
Motor and Pulley Installation
Mount the motor using the provided carriage bolts in the adjustable channels. Align the motor shaft with the blower pulley. Install the adjustable motor pulley and tighten the set screw. Ensure all bolts are securely tightened.
Electrical Installation
Electrical supply must match the motor and pump specifications. Use switches or contactors of proper current capacity. Refer to the wiring diagrams on page 4 for typical connections.
Operation
For best cooling performance, pre-wet the pads by running the pump for a few minutes before starting the blower. The cooler can be used without water for ventilation purposes when outside air is cool or humidity is high. To cool efficiently, ensure adequate exhaust (open windows or doors) to remove stale air.
Maintenance
Spring Start-Up
- Check belt tension and readjust if needed.
- Oil blower bearings and motor (if equipped with oil lines) with non-detergent 20/30 weight oil once a year. Do not over-oil.
- Clean the pump and check for blockages.
- Replace pads at the beginning and mid-season for maximum efficiency.
Winter Shut Down
- Drain all water from the cooler and supply line.
- Disconnect the water line to prevent freezing.
- Disconnect power supply.
- Cover the unit to protect the finish.
Troubleshooting
If the unit fails to start, check the power, fuse, and circuit breaker. If air delivery is inadequate, check for insufficient exhaust, loose belts, or clogged pads. If the unit is noisy, check for dry bearings, loose parts, or wheel rubbing. If there is a musty odor, drain the pan and clean the pads.

Practical help
Common problems
Check power supply, fuse, and circuit breaker. Ensure belt is not too loose or tight. Check if motor is overheated or locked.
Open windows or doors to increase exhaust. Adjust belt tension. Clean pads and water distribution system.
Oil bearings, inspect and realign blower wheel, or tighten loose parts.
Drain pan and clean pads. Check water distribution system and ensure pump is working properly.
Before use
- Ensure mounting surface supports the operating weight.
- Verify electrical supply matches motor/pump specifications.
- Ensure unit is properly grounded.
- Pre-wet pads before starting the blower.
- Check belt tension (3 lb force should deflect belt 3/4 inch).
- Ensure water supply is not from a water softener.
