Quick Guide for the Hosmer 10X Hook

The Hosmer 10X Hook is a pediatric prosthetic terminal device designed for fine prehension and gross grasping. It is a voluntary-opening device controlled by body motions via a cable. Installation and adjustments must be performed by a qualified prosthetist.

Intended Use and Performance

This device is intended for single patient use. Key specifications include:

• Length: 3.4 in. (86 mm)
• Weight: 3 oz. (85 g)
• Proximal Connector: 1/2-20 Standard Thread
• Coating: Nitrile finger coating for compliance and protection

Installation and Cabling

The hook is compatible with any Fillauer wrist unit featuring a 1/2-20 internal thread. When installing the cable:

• The thumb receiver is designed for a 9/32 inch ball terminal.
• Select a triple swivel with a 9/32 inch ball terminal that matches the prosthesis cable.
• Ensure cable routing provides a direct line of pull to minimize bends, which prevents excess friction or cable failure.

Adjusting Grasp Tension

Grasping force can be adjusted using the following components:

• Tension Bands: Apply using the E-Z Hook Tension Band Applier (55144). Available in beige (53869) or black (53869-BLK).
• Hook Rings: Use model 57500 for greater tension.
• Tension Springs: Use model 55363 for greater tension, especially in environments with chemical or heat exposure.

Care and Maintenance

To maintain the device:

• Rinse the device with fresh water and dry immediately after exposure to salt, chlorine, or debris.
• Store in a cool, clean, dry environment away from harsh chemicals like chlorine, acids, or acetone.
• The nitrile coating is expected to wear under normal use and can be replaced.

Safety Warnings

• Temperature: Do not expose nitrile coatings to items above 85°C (185°F).
• Weight Support: Aluminum hooks are not intended to support partial or full body weight.
• Driving: Ability to drive should be determined by a specialist. Do not rely on cable tension for grasp control if cleared to drive.
• Environment: Do not subject the device to dust, debris, abrasives, or extreme temperatures (below -5°C or above 50°C).

Serious Incidents

In the event of a serious incident, seek immediate medical help and contact your prosthetist. Clinicians should contact their local Fillauer representative immediately in the event of device failure.
