Quick Guide for Fillauer 12P & 10P Hooks
The Fillauer 12P and 10P are pediatric prosthetic terminal devices, often called "canted split hooks." They are designed for body-powered control via a cable system. Important: All attachment, adjustment, alignment, and delivery of this device must be performed by or under the direct supervision of a qualified prosthetist. Attempting these activities without professional supervision may void the warranty.
Intended Use and Performance
These devices provide both fine prehension and gross grasping. They are voluntary-opening devices with a plastisol-coated surface for protection. Both models are intended for single-patient use only.
- Model 12P: 2.75 in. (70 cm) length, 3 oz. (85 g) weight.
- Model 10P: 3.4 in. (86 cm) length, 3 oz. (85 g) weight.
- Attachment: Both models use a 1/2-20 thread.
Installation and Cabling
The hook is designed to be installed in any Fillauer wrist unit with a 1/2-20 internal thread. Follow the specific instructions provided with the wrist unit for optimal results.
Cabling Requirements: The hook thumb features a receiver for a 9/32 inch ball terminal. A triple swivel with a 9/32 inch ball terminal should be selected to match the prosthesis cable. Ensure the cable routing provides a direct line of pull to minimize bends, which prevents excess friction or cable failure.
Adjusting Grasp Tension
Grasping force can be adjusted by adding tension bands, rings, or springs:
- Tension Bands: Apply using the E-Z Hook Tension Band Applier (55144). Available in beige (53869) or black (53869-BLK) for 10P, and beige (55674) for 12P.
- Hook Rings: Use part number 57500 for greater tension.
- Tension Springs: Use part number 55363 for greater tension. Springs are recommended for environments involving chemical or heat exposure.
Safety and Warnings
- Weight Support: Aluminum prosthetic hooks are not intended to support partial or full body weight. Use steel or titanium hooks for heavy-duty applications.
- Driving: An upper-limb prosthetic user's ability to drive must be determined on a case-by-case basis by a specialist. Consult local governing authorities regarding restrictions.
- Environmental Conditions: Do not expose the device to dust, debris, abrasives, vibration, or extreme temperatures (below -5 °C or above 50 °C).
- Water Exposure: The hook is waterproof to 1 meter. If submerged, rinse with fresh water and dry immediately to remove salt, chlorine, or debris.
Care and Maintenance
Store the device in a cool, clean, dry environment away from harsh chemicals such as chlorine, acids, or acetone. If the device is exposed to bacteria or infectious agents, dispose of it according to local regulations for contaminated material. Metal components may be recycled at appropriate facilities.
Practical help
Common problems
Ensure the device is not subjected to dust, debris, abrasives, or extreme temperatures. Rinse with fresh water and dry immediately if exposed to liquids or contaminants.
Add additional tension bands, hook rings (57500), or stainless-steel tension springs (55363) to increase force.
Ensure the cable routing provides a direct line of pull to minimize bends.
Before use
- Ensure installation is performed by a qualified prosthetist.
- Verify the wrist unit has a 1/2-20 internal thread.
- Confirm the cable uses a 9/32 inch ball terminal.
- Check that cable routing allows a direct line of pull.
- Verify that only Fillauer-approved tension bands, rings, or springs are used.
Specs in practice
- 1/2-20 Thread
- The standard attachment thread size required for the wrist unit.
- 9/32 inch ball terminal
- The required size for the cable connection at the hook thumb.
- Waterproof to 1 meter
- The device can be submerged but must be rinsed with fresh water and dried immediately afterward.
Model compatibility
- Compatible with Fillauer wrists with 1/2-20 internal thread.
- Only use Fillauer tension bands, hook rings, and tension springs for adjustments.
- Damage caused by other manufacturers' wrist units is not covered under warranty.
