Quick guide from the manual
This document provides essential instructions for setting up and configuring the Honeywell Granit 1980i industrial scanner. It covers physical connection to a host computer, scanning techniques for different distances, and basic programming via barcodes.
Scanner connection
To connect the scanner, ensure the computer is powered off. Insert the cable into the scanner, release the locking plate, slide the connector base into position to secure the cable, and tighten the screw. Once connected, power on the computer. For RS232 connections, ensure the power supply is properly assembled if included.
Scanning techniques
Near scanning (under 30cm / 11.8 inches): Use the red illumination and align the center of the box over the barcode. The laser aimer will appear to the right of the barcode center.
Far scanning (up to 15.2m / 50 feet): Use the laser aimer to target the center of the barcode. Note that the red illumination may not be clearly visible at long distances.
Reflective surfaces: If a barcode is coated and highly reflective, tilt the scanner at a slight angle to improve readability.
Configuration and programming
The scanner can be configured by scanning specific barcodes provided in the manual:
- Standard Product Defaults: Resets the scanner to factory settings.
- USB Serial: Emulates an RS232 COM port. Windows users may need to download drivers from www.honeywellaidc.com. Apple Macintosh computers recognize the scanner as a USB CDC device automatically.
- USB PC Keyboard: Configures the scanner for standard keyboard input.
- Keyboard Country Layout: Scan the country programming barcode, followed by the numeric code from the chart, and finally the save barcode.
- Suffix/Prefix: Options to add CR (Enter) or Tab suffixes, or a Code ID prefix to all symbologies.
Advanced settings
The scanner supports additional features such as Aimer Delay (useful for long-range scanning) and Function Code transmission. For advanced configuration, use the EZConfig-Scanning software available at www.honeywellaidc.com.
