Quick guide from the manual

The Benchy Carbon is a portable draft system designed for dispensing beverages. Key operational requirements include maintaining 100mm of clearance around air vents for adequate airflow and operating the unit on a flat surface (maximum 20-degree angle). Never use unauthorized power converters, battery chargers, or DC generators to power the unit, as this may damage the inverter.

Temperature control

The unit uses an ESC-961neo controller. To adjust the temperature:

  • Press and release the set button to enter the user menu.
  • Press set again to display the target temperature.
  • Use the up and down arrows to adjust the value.
  • Press the button or wait 30 seconds to save and return to the home screen.

Warning: Do not set the temperature below 0°C to avoid freezing the beverage.

Installation requirements

For optimal performance, ensure the unit is placed on a flat surface. Operating the unit on its side or at angles greater than 20 degrees can cause permanent compressor damage. Avoid external heat sources such as direct sunlight or gas stoves.

DC cable requirements

When running the unit off battery power, use pure copper cable to minimize power loss. The required cable gauge depends on the length of the run. The system operates between 9.6V-18V DC or 21.3V-31.5V DC. If using voltages between 18V and 21.3V, a step-down power module is required.

Dispensing setup

To dispense, attach taps to the shanks on the front of the unit using a 7-in-1 Facet Tap Wrench. Connect your kegs using 8mm EVABarrier tubing pushed into the bulkhead fittings on the back. Ensure the hose is cut straight and pushed in to its full depth. Connect CO2 to your keg and set the pressure based on the desired carbonation level and ambient temperature.

Cleaning and maintenance

Use only KegLand-approved cleaners (e.g., StellarOxy, StellarClean) and sanitizers (e.g., Phosphoric acid, StellarSan). To clean product lines, use a Gas Free Ball Lock Line Cleaning Kit. Clean the exterior of the unit with Homebright streak-free stainless steel cleaner.

Troubleshooting fault codes

The power button flashes to indicate errors:

  • 1 Flash: Voltage Fault (input voltage out of range).
  • 2 Flashes: Fan Fault Current (fan output > 1A).
  • 3 Flashes: Compressor Start Fault (rotor blocked or system pressure > 6 bar).
  • 4 Flashes: Minimum Motor Speed Fault (compressor overloaded or rotor speed not sensed).
  • 5 Flashes: Thermal Fault (load or ambient temperature too high).
  • 6 Flashes: Controller Hardware Fault.

Practical help

Common problems

Beer freezing

Do not set the temperature below 0°C.

Voltage Fault (1 flash)

Check that input voltage is within the setting range (9.6V-18V or 21.3V-31.5V).

Compressor Start Fault (3 flashes)

Check if the rotor is blocked or if system pressure is too high (above 6 bar).

Thermal Fault (5 flashes)

Reduce load on the compressor or lower the ambient temperature.

Before use

  • Ensure 100mm clearance on all sides for airflow.
  • Place on a flat surface (max 20-degree angle).
  • Use only KegLand-supplied power converters.
  • Use pure copper cable for DC power.
  • Check cable gauge against length requirements.
  • Ensure EVABarrier hose is cut straight and fully inserted into fittings.

Specs in practice

21.3V - 31.5V DC
Operating range for 24V system.
2.3-2.8 volumes
Recommended carbonation level for most beer styles.
