Quick guide from the manual

This document provides installation and setup instructions for the Raymarine Cyclone Open Array Radar. It covers the pedestal, antenna, and the essential VCM100 Voltage Converter Module. Ensure all safety warnings are followed, particularly regarding high voltage and radio frequency radiation.

Product overview

The Cyclone Open Array Radar is a solid-state radar system designed for marine use. It features Doppler target tracking, CHIRP pulse compression, and requires a compatible Raymarine multifunction display (Axiom, Axiom+, Axiom Pro, or Axiom XL) running LightHouse 3 software version 3.16 or later.

Location requirements

  • Radar Scanner: Mount above head height, clear of large objects (masts, searchlights), and at least 1m away from magnetic compasses. Ensure the platform is rigid and stable.
  • VCM100: Must be mounted below decks in a well-ventilated area, away from heat and moisture.

Installation

Mounting the pedestal

  1. Select a flat, clear platform.
  2. Use the supplied mounting template to mark and drill holes.
  3. Use lifting equipment to position the pedestal (weight is at least 16 kg).
  4. Secure the pedestal using the provided studs, nuts, and washers. Tighten to 30 Nm.

Mounting the VCM100

  1. Mark and drill holes for the VCM100 unit.
  2. Secure the unit using the provided self-tapping screws.
  3. Install the cable clamp approximately 50 mm below the unit to support cables.

Cables and connections

Cables must be routed to avoid heat, moving parts, and high-current lines. Use watertight feed-throughs for bulkheads. The system supports two cable exit options: rear exit or through-surface cabling. If using through-surface cabling, the aperture must be sealed with marine-grade sealant to prevent water ingress.

Power connections

The radar must be powered via the VCM100 Voltage Converter Module (E70648). Do not connect the radar directly to a battery. Ensure appropriate fuse protection is installed at the power source (15A thermal breaker/20A fuse for 12V; 8A thermal breaker/10A fuse for 24V).

System checks

After installation, perform an initial power-on test. The radar should enter standby mode. Use the MFD to power up the radar. If the radar objects do not align with the boat's bow, perform a bearing alignment via the MFD menu: Menu > Installation > Bearing alignment.

Troubleshooting

  • Radar not turning on: Check fuses, breakers, and power cable connections.
  • Radar not initializing (VCM in sleep mode): Check power connection at VCM (Input 12/24V, Output 42V).
  • Bearing alignment error: Perform bearing alignment procedure.

Technical support

Practical help

Common problems

Radar does not turn on or keeps turning off

Check condition of fuses and breakers. Verify power cable connectors are fully inserted and locked. Check battery voltage and cable integrity.

Radar will not initialize (VCM stuck in sleep mode)

Check power connection at VCM. Ensure input voltage is 12V or 24V and output is 42V.

Displayed bearing is different to the true bearing

Perform the Bearing Alignment procedure via the MFD menu: Menu > Installation > Bearing alignment.

Before use

  • Ensure radar is mounted above head height.
  • Verify VCM100 is installed below decks.
  • Check that all cables are routed and secured with strain relief.
  • Ensure radar is at least 1m away from magnetic compasses.
  • Verify MFD software is version 3.16 or later.
