Quick Guide

This manual provides essential instructions for the operation and maintenance of Avantco commercial refrigerators and freezers. Important: If the unit was transported on its side, allow it to stand upright for at least 24 hours before plugging it in. Always maintain 6 inches of clearance on all sides for proper airflow. Do not use extension cords and ensure the unit is plugged into a dedicated, grounded outlet.

Installation

Proper installation is critical for performance and warranty coverage.

• Surface: Install on a strong, level surface to prevent noise and malfunction.
• Environment: Use indoors in a well-ventilated area away from heat and moisture-generating equipment. Avoid direct sunlight.
• Shelving: Install shelves with the raised lip facing up towards the rear of the cabinet to ensure proper airflow.
• Door Conversion: Some models (178SS1RHC and 178SS1FHC) can be converted to left-hinged doors using the optional kit (178SS1KITFR). Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the manual for removing the vent, top panel, and hinges.

Electrical Requirements

Ensure the unit is supplied with the required voltage as specified on the nameplate. Use a dedicated, grounded outlet with appropriate over-current protection. Do not use extension cords. If the unit is unplugged, wait at least 10 minutes before plugging it back in to prevent compressor damage.

Temperature Adjustment

Units are factory-set for optimal food safety. To adjust the minimum temperature:

• Hold the SET button for 1 second until the display flashes.
• Use the arrow buttons to select the desired minimum temperature.
• Press SET again to save the settings.

Note: The cabinet temperature will fluctuate up to +7 degrees above the set minimum as the compressor cycles.

Defrosting

The unit performs automatic defrost cycles. To run a manual defrost cycle:

• Freezers: Press the defrost button (def and down arrow) for approximately 5 seconds.
• Refrigerators: Press the defrost button (snowflake symbol and down arrow) for approximately 3 seconds.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures efficient operation and longevity.

• Condenser Coil: Clean at least once per month using a commercial condenser coil cleaner. Keep free of dust, dirt, and lint.
• Interior: Clean with warm water and mild soap. Do not use steel wool, caustic soap, or bleach.
• Gaskets: Wash weekly. Remove from the frame, soak in warm soapy water, dry, and replace. Check for a proper seal.
• Fan Blades/Motor: Clean with a soft cloth if necessary. Cover the motor when washing blades to prevent moisture damage.

Troubleshooting

If the unit is not performing correctly, check the following:

• Compressor not running: Check for a blown fuse, tripped breaker, unplugged cord, or if the unit is in a defrost cycle.
• Temperature too warm: Check if the thermostat is set too high, airflow is blocked, refrigerant levels are low, or the door is ajar.
• Light not working: Check the switch, bulb connection, or if the bulb is burned out.
• Condensation: Inspect the door gasket for proper sealing.
