Quick guide from the manual

This document provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of the Chapin 22149XP sprayer. Always read the full manual before operation. Key safety requirements include wearing protective gear (goggles, gloves, long sleeves/pants), never leaving the sprayer in direct sunlight, and never using tools to remove the pump while the tank is pressurized.

Safety Warnings

  • Explosion Hazard: Never leave a pressurized sprayer in the hot sun. Heat causes pressure build-up.
  • Chemical Safety: Never spray flammable, caustic, acidic, chlorine, bleach, or other corrosive solutions. Always follow the chemical manufacturer's instructions.
  • Pressure Safety: Never stand with your face or body over the tank when pumping or loosening the pump. Never use any tool to remove the pump if there is pressure in the sprayer.

Assembly

Hose to Tank

  1. Ensure the white outlet tube is attached to the outlet tube adapter.
  2. Insert the outlet tube portion of the discharge assembly into the tank adapter.
  3. Align the tab with the notches on the tank adapter and insert firmly.
  4. Tighten the retaining nut securely to the tank adapter.

Extension Wand and Nozzle Assembly

The dripless shut-off comes pre-assembled. To attach the nozzle directly to the shut-off, unthread the brass extension nut and metal rod. Assemble the valve seat, nozzle adapter, and nozzle to the shut-off. Ensure correct orientation of the valve seat to prevent leaks.

Pre-Use Check

  • Check the tightness of the hose nut.
  • Inspect the hose for cracks, softness, or brittleness. Replace if damaged.
  • Inspect the tank interior and exterior for signs of deterioration.
  • Perform a test with water only: pump 8-10 strokes and check for leaks.

Filling, Pressurizing and Spraying

Pressurizing and Spraying Operation
Pressurizing and Spraying Operation
Lock-Off Feature
Lock-Off Feature
  1. Filling: Turn the pump handle counterclockwise to remove. Fill the tank to the proper gallon marker. Do not overfill.
  2. Pressurizing: Replace the pump and tighten securely. Turn the handle clockwise to tighten. Pump until you feel resistance.
  3. Spraying: Push the handle down and turn 1/4 turn clockwise to lock. Begin spraying. Re-pump as needed to maintain force.
  4. Lock-Off: To prevent spraying, push the trigger forward and rotate the locking mechanism into the lock-off position.

Pressure Release

To release pressure, lift and hold the pressure relief valve cap until air is completely exhausted, OR turn the valve slowly counterclockwise until air stops escaping. Stay away from the sprayer until all air has escaped.

Care, Storage and Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Rinse thoroughly with the recommended solvent. Run solvent through the discharge assembly.
  • Storage: Store the tank upside down with the pump removed in a warm, dry location.
  • Lubrication: Periodically oil the pump by dropping 10-12 drops of light oil down the pump rod through the opening in the cover.

Practical help

Common problems

Sprayer leaks

Check hose nut tightness, inspect hose for damage, or ensure the valve seat in the nozzle assembly is oriented correctly.

Discharge is clogged

Direct the shut-off away from you and open to clear the blockage.

Tank deterioration

If the tank shows signs of cracks or weakness, discard immediately. Do not attempt to patch leaks.

Before use

  • Check hose nut tightness.
  • Inspect hose for cracks, softness, or brittleness.
  • Inspect tank interior and exterior for deterioration.
  • Perform test with water only (pump 8-10 strokes).
