Operation Manual for Delta PCS 125kW/100kW Protocol
A technical guide for the Delta PCS 125kW/100kW, covering Modbus RTU communication, system state transitions, configuration procedures, and grid code settings.
Table of contents
Quick guide from the manual
This document provides the technical protocol for operating the Delta PCS 125kW/100kW via Modbus RTU. It is intended for users to understand system architecture, state machines, and configuration requirements for grid-tied, standalone, and AFE modes.
System architecture
The PCS system includes DC and AC disconnects, converters, and relays. Users can monitor the state of these breakers via register 1514 (HEX). The system follows a defined state machine (S0-S9) to manage initialization, soft-start, normal operation, and fault handling.
Installation configuration
Before operation, the system must be configured. The recommended process is to read the current value, write the new value if necessary, and read again to verify. Configurations must be performed while the PCS is in Standby (S1) or Fault (S4) state.
- Communication: Set RS485 ID, baud rate, parity, and stop bits.
- Infrastructure: Define the number of PCS units, battery supplier, and battery bank/rack configuration.
- Run Mode: Set the system to Grid-tie, Standalone, or AFE mode as required.
Normal operation
The manual details specific operation sequences for different modes:
- Grid-tie mode: Standard operation sequence involves setting run modes, resetting power commands, and enabling ramp rates before turning the PCS ON.
- Standalone (SA) mode: Requires the Grid Tie breaker to be OPEN.
- AFE mode: Requires specific flag settings and output voltage configuration.
Grid code and protection
Users must set the appropriate grid code via register 0x10DE based on the application region (e.g., AS4777.2, VDE4110, G99). The manual also covers advanced settings for Volt-Var, Volt-Watt, Freq-Watt, and ride-through functions.
Fault logs
System fault logs can be accessed by preloading the log index (1-200) via register 0x101A and then reading the fault data from registers 0x1600-0x1603.
Practical help
Common problems
Ensure the PCS is in 'STANDBY' (S1) or 'FAULT' (S4) state before attempting to modify settings.
Ensure all PCS units have unique IDs if using a common bus, or set them to the same ID if they are not communicating on a common bus.
Try repeating the write (Step 2) and verification (Step 3) process again.
Before use
- Confirm all communication parameters (ID, baud rate) are set correctly.
- Verify the number of PCS units and battery infrastructure settings.
- Ensure the SS/Main breaker/Contactor for Grid-tie is closed for grid-connected operation.
- Ensure the SS/Grid Tie breaker is open for Standalone (SA) mode.
- Check that the PCS state is in 'STANDBY' before sending the 'Power ON' command.
Specs in practice
- Register 0x1513
- Used to read the current system state of the PCS.
- Register 0x10DE
- Used to set the Grid Code type for regional compliance.
Model compatibility
- Grid code settings vary by region (e.g., Australia, New Zealand, Germany, UK).
- Some functions like high/low voltage ride-through are specific to certain grid codes (e.g., VDE4110).
