Quick guide from the manual

This document provides essential instructions for the setup, operation, and maintenance of the JBL SUB10 powered subwoofer. Proper placement and configuration are critical for achieving a balanced sound system. Always ensure the device is connected to a grounded power source and follow all safety precautions to prevent electric shock or fire.

Placement

While low frequencies are generally nondirectional, room acoustics, reflections, and standing waves significantly impact performance. Experiment with the subwoofer's location in your room to find the best bass response. It is recommended to position the subwoofer near a satellite speaker to maintain a cohesive soundstage.

System Connections

The subwoofer offers multiple connection methods depending on your receiver/processor capabilities:

  • Dolby Digital or DTS with LFE/Subwoofer Output: Connect the LFE or subwoofer output from your receiver to the LFE input on the subwoofer.
  • Receiver without Subwoofer Output: Use two sets of speaker wire to connect your receiver's front speaker outputs to the subwoofer's speaker-level inputs, and then from the subwoofer's speaker-level outputs to your main speakers.
  • Note: If your receiver has only one subwoofer output, you may use either the L or R line-level input.

Operation

Power On: Connect the AC cord to a wall outlet. Set the Subwoofer-Level control to 'min' initially, then turn on the power switch. Start your audio system at a moderate level.

Auto On/Standby: When the Auto Switch is set to 'auto', the subwoofer enters standby mode after approximately 10 minutes of no signal detection and powers on instantly when a signal is detected.

Adjustments:

  • Subwoofer-Level Control: Adjust to achieve a harmonious blend with your main speakers. Avoid setting it too high, which can result in overpowering, boomy bass.
  • Phase Switch: Set to 0 or 180 degrees to maximize bass output at your primary listening position.
  • Crossover Adjustment: Determines the highest frequency the subwoofer reproduces. Set between 50Hz–100Hz for larger speakers, or 120Hz–150Hz for smaller bookshelf speakers. Note: This control is bypassed when using the LFE input.

Maintenance and Service

Clean the enclosure with a soft cloth and gently vacuum the grille. Do not use solvents. Periodically inspect all wiring connections. If you encounter sound issues, verify all connections and cables. If a problem persists in one speaker, swap the connection wires to isolate whether the fault lies with the speaker or the source component. Practical help

Common problems

No sound from the subwoofer

Check AC power cord, ensure the power switch is 'on', verify input cables are connected properly, and ensure the subwoofer-level control is not set to 'min'.

Bass sounds boomy or overpowering

Lower the Subwoofer-Level control to achieve a more harmonious blend with your main speakers.

Sound issue in one speaker

Reverse the connection wires to the left and right system. If the problem moves to the other speaker, the fault is in the source component or cable.

Before use

  • Ensure the power source matches the label on the unit.
  • Do not block ventilation openings.
  • Connect striped wire to the red (+) speaker terminal.
  • Set Subwoofer-Level control to 'min' before initial power-up.
  • Verify all cables are securely connected.
