Quick Guide from the Manual

The Presto 10-quart Kitchen Kettle XL is a versatile appliance designed for steaming, stewing, roasting, boiling, and deep frying. Before first use, ensure all parts are assembled correctly and the unit is washed. Always place the appliance on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface. Never use an extension cord. The appliance features a detachable Control Master heat control and a magnetic cord for safety.

Assembly Instructions

Attaching Legs and Handles

Tools required: #2 Phillips screwdriver. Parts included: 4 legs, 2 handles.

  • Legs: Place the appliance upside down. Remove screws from mounting projections. Align leg with projection, fasten with screw. Ensure the leg does not rock.
  • Handles: Place upside down. Remove screws from tabs. Slide handle onto tab, align holes, and fasten securely. Handles should be parallel with the table when the unit is upright.

Attaching Basket Handle

The basket handle has two positions depending on the cooking method:

  • Deep Frying/Blanching: Position the handle outside the basket. Slide the lock bar up, squeeze handle bars, fit into bracket guides, and slide the lock bar down to lock.
  • Steaming: Position the handle inside the basket. Follow the same locking procedure, ensuring the lock bar touches the top of the drain hook.

Operation

Connecting Power: Insert the heat control probe into the appliance so the two electrical pins are fully inserted. Attach the magnetic cord to the heat control by aligning the magnetic plug end with the pins. The plug is polarized and fits only one way.

Cooking: Plug into a 120VAC outlet. Preheat as indicated by the cooking method. The indicator light will cycle on and off to maintain temperature. When finished, turn the heat control to OFF, remove the plug from the wall, and then remove the magnetic plug from the heat control.

Cooking Methods

The appliance supports various cooking methods:

  • Simmer: Heat at 250° until boiling, then reduce heat until the indicator light turns off.
  • Braise: Brown meat at 375°, add liquid, bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Steam: Use 2 cups of liquid. Place food in the basket and steam according to the chart provided in the manual.
  • Boil: Use for pasta or rice. Bring water to a rolling boil at 250°.
  • Blanch: Boil water at 250°, submerge vegetables in the basket, then plunge into ice water.
  • Deep Fry: Preheat oil to 400°. Do not overfill the basket (max 2/3 full, 1/3 for homemade fries).

Care and Cleaning

  • Hand Wash Only: Do not immerse the heat control or magnetic cord in water.
  • Cleaning the Base: Use warm, soapy water and a nylon mesh scouring pad. Do not use steel wool or abrasive cleaners.
  • Dishwasher Warning: Do not wash the appliance in the dishwasher as it will damage the nonstick coating and cause discoloration.
  • Glass Cover: Dishwasher safe. Handle carefully to avoid chipping or cracking.
