Quick guide from the manual

This manual covers the operation and maintenance of Riester stethoscopes. Ensure you use only original Riester accessories to maintain functionality. The devices are latex-free and designed for auscultation of body sounds, including heart, lung, and bowel sounds, as well as blood pressure measurement.

Frequency adjustment

For models like duplex, duplex baby, duplex neonatal, tristar, and ri-rap, you can switch between the membrane (high frequencies) and the bell side (low frequencies) by turning the chest-piece. Ensure good surface adaptation during auscultation. For cardiophon 2.0 and duplex 2.0 models, a marking on the tubing connection indicates which membrane is currently active.

Binaural adjustment

The binaurals must be adjusted to the anatomically correct angle, sitting slightly forward in the ear canal. To adjust the angle: Rotate the binaurals individually until the ear-tips sit correctly and block external noise. To adjust contact pressure: If the pressure is too weak, press the binaurals together. If the pressure is too strong, expand the binaurals.

Membrane replacement

To change the membrane, take the non-chill ring between your thumb and index finger and pull it off the chest-piece. Place the non-chill ring on a flat surface, insert the new membrane (printed side facing up), and press the ring back onto the chest-piece. For ri-rap models, unscrew the ring nut, insert the membrane, and fasten the nut again. Ensure the membrane remains correctly placed within its bordering.

Cleaning and care

Stethoscopes can be cleaned on the outside using a damp cloth. Use only disinfectants with proven effectiveness according to national guidelines. After disinfection, wipe the instrument with a damp cloth to remove any residue. Important: Never put stethoscopes into liquids. Do not use phenol-based disinfectants. The pH-value of solvents must be between 4.5 and 10. Never use the stethoscope without ear olives or membranes.

Storage and maintenance

Store the stethoscope in a clean, dry place. Ambient temperature for operation is -10°C to +40°C (30-70% humidity). Storage temperature is -10°C to +55°C (10-95% humidity). Riester stethoscopes do not require special maintenance. If the device requires checking, contact an authorized Riester dealer.

Practical help

Common problems

Poor sound quality or external noise interference

Ensure the ear-tips are angled correctly towards the ear canal and that the chest-piece has good surface adaptation.

Binaural pressure is uncomfortable

Adjust pressure by pressing the binaurals together (to increase pressure) or expanding them (to decrease pressure).

Cannot determine which side is active

For cardiophon 2.0/duplex 2.0, check the marking on the tubing connection. For other models, stroke the membrane to hear if it is active.

Before use

  • Verify the stethoscope is latex-free.
  • Check that ear olives are clean and free of obstructions.
  • Ensure the correct side of the chest-piece (membrane or bell) is selected.
  • Adjust the binaural angle to fit your ear canal.
  • Confirm the membrane is properly seated in the non-chill ring.
