Cooking tips
Meat: Brown meat and sauté vegetables in a pan before adding to the pot. Avoid high-fat meat or trim excess fat.
Fish: Do not cook for long periods. Grease the base of the pot with butter or margarine. Cook on low (1) for 2-3 hours.
Vegetables: Root vegetables (carrots, potatoes, onions) take longer to cook than meat; cut into 5mm slices and sauté for 2-3 minutes before adding.
Pulses: Boil dried beans (e.g., red kidney beans) for at least 10 minutes before adding to the slow cooker to remove toxins. Soak dried peas and beans for 8 hours before cooking.
Soup: Brown meat and vegetables first. Add milk only in the final half hour of cooking.
