Quick guide from the manual
This document provides technical procedures for inspecting and adjusting the clutch pedal system in the Toyota CL-7. It covers critical measurements for pedal height, freeplay, and push rod play, as well as instructions for verifying the clutch release point and the clutch start switch functionality.
Clutch pedal check and adjustment
Follow these steps to ensure the clutch pedal is operating within factory specifications:
- Pedal Height: Measure from the asphalt sheet. The standard height is 172–182 mm (6.8–7.2 in.). If incorrect, loosen the lock nut and turn the stopper bolt until the height is correct, then tighten the lock nut.
- Pedal Freeplay: Push the pedal until clutch resistance is felt. The standard range is 5.0–15.0 mm (0.197–0.591 in.).
- Push Rod Play: Push the pedal softly until resistance increases. The standard play at the pedal top is 1.0–5.0 mm (0.039–0.197 in.).
- Adjustment: If freeplay or push rod play are incorrect, loosen the lock nut and turn the push rod until the values are within range, then tighten the lock nut. Always re-check pedal height after adjusting freeplay.
Clutch release point inspection
To inspect the release point:
- Engage the parking brake and install wheel stoppers.
- Start and idle the engine.
- Without depressing the clutch, shift into reverse until gears contact.
- Gradually depress the clutch and measure the distance from the release point (where gear noise stops) to the full stroke end position.
- The standard distance is 25 mm (0.98 in.) or more. If the distance is not met, inspect pedal height, push rod play, bleed the clutch line, or inspect the clutch cover and disc.
Clutch start system and switch
The clutch start system ensures the engine only starts when the pedal is fully depressed.
- System Check: Verify the engine does not start when the pedal is released, and that it starts when the pedal is fully depressed. Adjust or replace the switch if necessary.
- Switch Continuity: Use a multimeter to check the clutch start switch. There should be continuity between terminals when the switch is ON (pushed) and no continuity when the switch is OFF (free). Replace the switch if these conditions are not met.
