Quick guide from the manual
This document provides procedures for inspecting and adjusting the clutch pedal system on the 2003 Toyota Tacoma. Key tasks include verifying pedal height, free play, push rod play, and testing the clutch start and cancel switches. Always ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the parking brake engaged before performing these checks.
Clutch pedal inspection and adjustment
Pedal height
Check the pedal height from the floor panel (170.0–180.0 mm) or from the asphalt sheet (167.0–177.0 mm). If the height is incorrect, loosen the lock nut and turn the stopper bolt until the height is correct, then tighten the lock nut.
Pedal free play and push rod play
Depress the pedal until clutch resistance is felt to check pedal free play (5.0–15.0 mm). Gently depress the pedal further until resistance increases to check push rod play (1.0–5.0 mm). If adjustments are needed, loosen the lock nut and turn the push rod until the play is correct, then tighten the lock nut. After adjustment, verify the pedal height.
Clutch release point
With the parking brake engaged and wheel stoppers installed, start the engine and let it idle. Without depressing the clutch, slowly shift the lever into reverse until gears contact. Gradually depress the clutch pedal and measure the stroke distance from the release point to the full stroke end position. The standard distance is 25 mm or more. If the distance is not as specified, check pedal height, push rod play, bleed the clutch line, or inspect the clutch cover and disc.
Clutch start system
Verify that the engine does not start when the clutch pedal is released and that it starts when the pedal is fully depressed. If the system fails this check, the clutch start switch may need replacement.
Switch continuity testing
Use an ohmmeter to check the continuity of the Clutch Start Switch and the Clutch Start Cancel Switch. For the Clutch Start Switch, the ON (pushed) position should show continuity, while the OFF (free) position should show no continuity. For the Clutch Start Cancel Switch, follow the specific terminal connection procedures outlined in the manual to verify continuity and operation.
