Westermo WeConfig 1.21.0 Software User Guide
A comprehensive guide for Westermo WeConfig 1.21.0, covering software installation prerequisites, required device protocols for network management, and operational limitations.
Table of contents
Quick guide from the manual
WeConfig 1.21.0 is a network management software tool designed for Westermo devices. To ensure full functionality, the software requires specific network drivers on the host PC and specific protocols to be enabled on the managed switches or routers.
Installation prerequisites
To successfully execute WeConfig, the following prerequisites must be met on the host computer:
- WinPcap: Version 4.1.3 or later.
- Npcap: Version 1.6 or later.
If neither is installed, WeConfig will run in a reduced mode with limited functionality. Note that if using Npcap, you must ensure you have acquired a valid license.
Device configuration requirements
To achieve full functionality of WeConfig, the following protocols must be enabled on the managed switches and routers:
- IPConfig: Required for devices running WeOS 4.
- mDNS: Required for devices running WeOS 5, Ibex, and BRD/MRD devices.
- HTTPS (Web): Must be enabled on WeOS devices. Administrator passwords must match the setup in the WeConfig device access dialog.
- SNMP: The read community must be set on the device to match the WeConfig setup.
- LLDP: Required for network topology discovery.
- SSH CLI: Must be enabled on WeOS devices for configuration access.
Operational limitations
Be aware of the following limitations when using WeConfig 1.21.0:
- Firmware dependencies: HTTPS-upload for upgrades is supported from WeOS 4.13 and later. Older versions require TFTP/FTP methods.
- Alarm monitoring: SNR high/low monitoring requires firmware version 4.18.0 or higher.
- VLAN configuration: Not supported on WeOS 4.13.4 or previous versions.
- Network discovery: Some low-end USB network interface cards (NICs) may discard LLDP frames, preventing WeConfig from learning network connections.
- Device identification: When importing devices from CSV files, the model name and firmware version are required for proper identification.
Practical help
Common problems
Install WinPcap 4.1.3 or Npcap 1.6 or later on the host PC.
Ensure HTTPS, SNMP, LLDP, and SSH are enabled on the target device and that passwords match the WeConfig access dialog.
Check if the host PC's NIC is discarding LLDP frames; some low-end USB NICs cause this issue.
If the device is running a WeOS version older than 4.13, use the TFTP or FTP method instead.
Before use
- Install WinPcap 4.1.3 or Npcap 1.6+
- Enable IPConfig protocol (for WeOS 4 devices)
- Enable mDNS (for WeOS 5, Ibex, BRD/MRD devices)
- Enable HTTPS, SNMP, LLDP, and SSH on target devices
- Verify firmware version meets requirements for specific features (e.g., 4.18.0+ for SNR alarms)
Model compatibility
- HTTPS-upload supported from WeOS 4.13+
- SNR alarm monitoring requires WeOS 4.18.0+
- VLAN configuration not supported on WeOS 4.13.4 or older
- WeConfig cannot detect powerline devices (DDW-002)
