Quick guide from the manual
The Behringer CS400 is a dynamics effects pedal designed to smooth out signal peaks and provide endless sustain. The unit does not have a dedicated power switch; it activates automatically when a 1/4 inch jack is inserted into the IN connector. To preserve battery life, always remove the input cable when the pedal is not in use.
Controls
- LEVEL: Adjusts the overall output volume of the effect.
- TONE: Controls the presence and clarity of the sound.
- ATTACK: Determines the speed at which the compressor reacts to the input signal (sweepable between slow and fast).
- SUSTAIN: Sets the amount of compression applied to achieve long-lasting tones.
- ON/BATT LED: Indicates when the effect is active and serves as a battery level monitor.
- Footswitch: Used to toggle the effect on or off.
Installation and Power
The pedal can be powered by a 9V battery or an external power supply. To install or replace the 9V battery, press the hinges on the pedal cover using a ballpoint pen to release it. Be careful not to scratch the casing. For external power, use a 9V regulated power supply (100 mA) with a 2 mm DC jack and negative center polarity.
Safety and Maintenance
Do not operate the device near water or heat sources. Use only authorized accessories. Do not attempt to service the unit yourself; contact qualified personnel if the power cord or plug is damaged.

Practical help
Common problems
Ensure a 1/4 inch jack is fully inserted into the IN connector, as this acts as the power switch.
Remove the instrument cable from the IN connector when the pedal is not in use to disconnect the power.
Before use
- Ensure you have a 9V battery (type 6LR61) or a compatible 9V regulated power supply.
- Check that your instrument cable is a standard 1/4 inch TS cable.
- Verify the power supply polarity is negative center if using an external adapter.
- Ensure the pedal is placed on a stable surface away from water or heat sources.
