Quick guide from the manual

This document provides essential instructions for priming the pump of the Black+Decker 186086-B battery-powered backpack sprayer. Priming is required when first operating a new unit or after extended storage if the pump is running but not spraying water.

Safety Warnings

  • Chemical Exposure: Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as recommended by the chemical manufacturer, including goggles, gloves, and protective clothing.
  • Maintenance: Ensure all chemicals are removed from the sprayer and the unit is cleaned before performing any maintenance.
  • Pressure: Always release pressure from the sprayer before performing maintenance to prevent high-speed ejection of components.

How to Check if Priming is Needed

  1. Fill the sprayer with approximately one gallon of water (do not use chemicals).
  2. Install the battery and turn the sprayer to the ON position.
  3. Aim the shut-off in a safe direction and squeeze the trigger lever.
  4. If water sprays, manual priming is not required. Turn the sprayer OFF and empty the tank.
  5. If the pump is audibly running but no water is spraying, proceed to the manual priming procedure.

Manual Priming Procedure

Removing the red filter from the tank
Removing the red filter from the tank
  1. Remove all liquid from the tank and rinse to remove residual chemicals.
  2. Remove the red cylindrical filter from inside the tank by rotating it approximately 1/8 turn counterclockwise and pulling it up.
  3. Turn the power switch to the ON position. If the sprayer has variable flow settings, set the dial to the highest setting.
  4. Squeeze the trigger lever and lock it in place to keep the valve open.
  5. Firmly press and hold the end of a garden hose (without a nozzle) directly to the pump inlet where the red filter was located, ensuring little to no gap for water to escape.
  6. Spray directly into the pump inlet while the power is on. The backpack should start spraying within 10 to 20 seconds.
  7. Once spraying begins, stop the hose, unlock the trigger, and turn the power OFF.
  8. Empty the tank if needed and reinstall the red filter.

Practical help

Common problems

Pump is audibly running but no water is spraying.

The pump requires manual priming. Follow the manual priming procedure using a garden hose.

Sprayer is pressurized during maintenance.

Always release pressure from the sprayer before performing any maintenance to avoid component ejection.

Before use

  • Wear appropriate PPE (goggles, gloves, protective clothing).
  • Ensure the tank is empty of chemicals before maintenance.
  • Release pressure from the sprayer.
  • Have a garden hose ready for the priming procedure.
  • Verify the red filter is removed before attempting to prime the pump inlet.

Specs in practice

1/8 turn counterclockwise
The specific rotation required to unlock and remove the red filter from the tank.
10-20 seconds
The expected time frame for the pump to begin spraying during the manual priming process.

Images and diagrams

  • The filter removal diagram shows the hand rotating the red filter 1/8 turn counterclockwise and then pulling it vertically out of the tank.

Model compatibility

  • This procedure is specific to the 186086-B model. Sprayer models and designs vary.
