  • Installing the Handle: Remove handle knobs and carriage bolts, attach the handle to the machine, move to the operating position, and secure the knobs. Ensure cables are routed to the outside of the handle.
  • Recoil-Starter Rope: Install the recoil-starter rope into the rope guide on the handle.
  • Adding Oil: Check the oil level and add SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30 detergent oil as needed. Do not overfill.
  • Grass Bag: Assemble the grass bag and attach it to the rear of the mower by lifting the rear deflector and inserting the rod ends into the handle bracket notches.

Operation

Before operating, inspect the area for debris and ensure all safety guards are in place.

Adjusting the cutting height
Adjusting the cutting height
  • Fueling: Use fresh, clean unleaded gasoline (87 octane or higher). Do not add oil to the fuel. Fill the tank outdoors when the engine is cold.
  • Starting the Engine: Hold the blade-control bar against the handle and pull the recoil-start handle sharply.
  • Cutting Height: Adjust the cutting height by moving the levers on the wheels. Ensure all wheels are set to the same height.
  • Self-Propel Drive: Pull the self-propel drive bar toward the handle to engage. Release the bar to disengage.
  • Stopping: Release the blade-control bar to shut off the engine. The engine and blade should stop within 3 seconds.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

Replacing the blade
Replacing the blade
  • Schedule: Check oil before each use. Service the air filter every 25 hours. Replace the blade yearly.
  • Cleaning: Clean grass clippings from under the machine after each use. You can use a hose to spray water under the deck while the engine is running.
  • Air Filter: Open the air-filter cover, replace the filter, and close the cover.
  • Oil Change: Run the engine briefly to warm the oil. Tip the machine on its side (air filter up) to drain. Refill with 0.44 L (15 fl oz) of oil.
  • Blade Replacement: Use a torque wrench to tighten the blade bolt to 82 N·m (60 ft-lb).

Storage

To store the machine, add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank, run the engine until it stops, and disconnect the spark plug wire. Clean the machine and store it in a cool, dry place.
