Quick guide from the manual

The Celestron 12V PowerTank 17 is a portable power station designed for charging devices, providing emergency lighting, and jump-starting vehicles. Always charge the unit before its first use and ensure the main switch is in the OFF position when not in use. If the yellow LED indicator illuminates during operation, the battery is low and requires immediate recharging.

Recharging

The unit can be recharged via AC (wall outlet) or DC (vehicle cigarette lighter). For AC charging, set the charger to the correct voltage, switch the PowerTank to the CHA position, and plug it in for 15-20 hours for the initial charge. For DC charging, the engine must be running to avoid draining the vehicle battery. Always recharge in an open area to prevent the buildup of explosive gases.

Starting aid for motor vehicles

The PowerTank can be used as a jump-start aid for partially discharged vehicle batteries. Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of the PowerTank to the corresponding terminals on the vehicle battery. Leave the connection for approximately 20 minutes to transfer a partial charge, then disconnect in reverse order. Never allow the jumper cables to touch each other while connected to the unit.

Operation

The PowerTank features multiple outputs and functions:

  • Power Supply: Provides 12V DC (10A) and 5V USB (1.5A) power. Ensure devices match these ratings.
  • Flashlight: Detachable for remote use. Use the ON/OFF button to cycle through modes.
  • Radio & Siren: Use the selector knob to switch between AM, FM, or the emergency siren.

Maintenance and replacement

The unit includes a built-in circuit breaker to protect against overcurrent. If power is cut, turn the unit OFF and press the circuit breaker button to reset. If the USB output fails, the internal fuse may need replacement with a new 2 Amp fuse. For long-term storage, keep the unit in a cool, dry place and fully charge it before storage. Recharge every 3-6 months depending on the storage temperature.
