Quick guide from the manual

The Celestron Travel Scope 70 is a portable refractor telescope designed for both terrestrial and astronomical observation. Safety Warning: Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or through the telescope without a proper solar filter, as this can cause permanent eye damage. Do not use eyepiece solar filters or Herschel wedges.

Assembling your telescope

We recommend setting up the telescope indoors for the first time.

Installing the finderscope
Installing the finderscope

Setting up the tripod

  1. Spread the tripod legs outward.
  2. Unlock the leg clamps to extend the legs to the desired height and lock them.
  3. Use the central column locking knob to raise the central column for additional height.

Attaching the telescope tube

  1. Loosen the tripod platform knob and tilt the platform 90 degrees.
  2. Secure the telescope tube to the tripod platform using the 1/4"x20 screw located under the center of the platform.
  3. Lower the platform to the level position and tighten the knob.

Installing the diagonal and eyepiece

  1. Remove the rear cap from the telescope tube and the caps from the diagonal.
  2. Insert the diagonal into the rear opening and tighten the setscrews.
  3. Insert the eyepiece into the diagonal and tighten the setscrew.

Installing the finderscope

  1. Locate the finderscope bracket on the telescope tube.
  2. Remove the knurled nuts from the threaded posts.
  3. Place the finderscope bracket over the posts and secure it with the knurled nuts.
  4. Remove the lens caps from the finderscope.

Aligning the finderscope

Finderscope alignment
Finderscope alignment
  1. Choose a distant target (at least 1/4 mile away) during the day.
  2. Center the target in the telescope's 20mm eyepiece.
  3. Look through the finderscope and use the three adjustment screws to move the crosshair until it is centered on the same object.

Telescope basics

Focusing

Turn the focus knob near the rear of the telescope. Turning it counterclockwise focuses on farther objects; clockwise focuses on closer objects. Ensure the front lens cap is removed before observing.

Calculating magnification

Magnification is calculated by dividing the telescope's focal length (400mm) by the eyepiece's focal length (e.g., 20mm or 10mm).

Telescope maintenance

Keep the optics clean to ensure the best performance.

  • Use a camel's hair brush or pressurized air to remove dust.
  • Use an optical cleaning solution with white tissue paper for deeper cleaning.
  • Do not rub in circles. Use low-pressure strokes from the center to the outer portion of the lens.
  • Replace lens covers when not in use to prevent contaminants from entering the tube.

Common problems

Blurry image

Adjust the focus knob. Ensure the front lens cap is removed. Avoid viewing through window glass or over heat sources like asphalt.

Finderscope not aligned

Perform the alignment procedure during the day using a distant object and the 20mm eyepiece.

Dew on optics

Use a hair dryer on a low setting or point the telescope at the ground until the dew evaporates.

Before use

  • Remove the front lens cap.
  • Ensure the tripod is stable and legs are locked.
  • Install the diagonal and eyepiece.
  • Align the finderscope with the main telescope optics.
