Table of contents

Important Safety Information

The Champion 12,000W Tri-Fuel Portable Generator is equipped with CO Shield technology, which monitors for carbon monoxide (CO) accumulation. If unsafe levels are detected, the generator will automatically shut off. Never operate the generator indoors, in garages, basements, or any enclosed space. Always operate outdoors in a well-ventilated area with the exhaust pointed away from people and buildings.

Assembly

The generator requires initial assembly before use:

  • Wheels: Install the 12-inch wheels using the provided roll pins, washers, and R-clips.
  • Battery: Connect the two halves of the battery connector to enable electric start.
  • Oil: Fill the engine with 5W-30 automotive oil. Do not overfill. Check the dipstick to ensure the level is correct.

Fueling

This generator can operate on three fuel types:

  • Gasoline: Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline (minimum 87 octane, max 10% ethanol). Do not overfill the tank.
  • Propane (LPG): Connect the LPG hose to the generator and the LPG cylinder. Ensure the cylinder is in an upright position.
  • Natural Gas (NG): Connect the NG hose to the generator and the supply line. Ensure the supply line is properly sized for the required flow rate.

Operation

Before starting, ensure the generator is on a flat, level surface and all electrical loads are disconnected.

  • Starting: Turn the fuel select dial to the desired fuel position (Gasoline, Propane, or Natural Gas). Pull the choke knob out (if starting a cold engine). Press the ignition switch to the START position. Once the engine starts, push the choke knob in to the RUN position.
  • Connecting Loads: Allow the engine to stabilize for a few minutes before connecting electrical devices. Connect the largest load first.
  • Stopping: Turn off and unplug all electrical loads. Turn the fuel select dial to the ENGINE OFF position. If using LPG or NG, close the supply valve on the cylinder or line.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for performance and longevity:

  • Oil: Change oil and filter after the first 5 hours (break-in period), then every 100 hours or annually.
  • Air Filter: Clean or replace as needed.
  • Spark Plug: Inspect, clean, and adjust the gap (0.022-0.028 in.) every 100 hours or annually.
  • Spark Arrestor: Clean carbon deposits from the screen periodically.

Troubleshooting

If the engine fails to start, check for fuel, ensure the oil level is correct, and verify the spark plug wire is connected. If the generator shuts down during operation, check for CO Shield activation (indicated by a blinking red LED) or low oil levels. If the CO Shield red LED blinks, move the generator to a well-ventilated area and ensure no obstructions are within 5 feet.

Practical help

Common problems

Engine will not start

Check for fuel, ensure oil level is correct, verify spark plug wire is attached, and ensure fuel select dial is set to the correct fuel.

Engine shuts down during operation

Check for CO Shield activation (red LED), low oil level, or out of fuel. Ensure the generator is in a well-ventilated area.

Repeated circuit breaker tripping

Generator is overloaded. Reduce the number of connected electrical devices.

Engine starts but runs roughly

Check if the choke is in the wrong position, or if the air/fuel filter is dirty.

Before use

  • Check oil level (5W-30 recommended).
  • Check fuel level (Gasoline, LPG, or NG).
  • Ensure generator is on a flat, level surface.
  • Check for fuel leaks (especially for LPG/NG).
  • Ensure CO Shield system is not tampered with.
  • Disconnect all electrical loads before starting.
