Quick guide from the manual
The Soul Food is an overdrive and clean boost pedal designed to provide a wide range of sounds, from clean boosts to full-on distortion. It operates using either a 9V power supply or a 9V battery. The pedal features three main controls and an internal switch to toggle between True Bypass and Buffered Bypass modes.
Controls
DRIVE Knob: Controls the amount of input gain. Turning clockwise increases the overdrive, moving from a clean boost to classic distortion. It also emphasizes mid-range frequencies.
TREBLE Knob: Acts as a tone control. The 12 o'clock position is neutral. Turning clockwise increases treble for a brighter sound, while turning counter-clockwise reduces high-end frequencies for a bassier tone.
VOL Knob: Sets the output level of the pedal. Turning clockwise increases the volume.
Connections and Bypass Mode
The pedal uses standard 1/4" jacks for input and output. Inside the pedal, there is an internal Bypass Mode switch located below the AMP jack.
- True Bypass: The input is connected directly to the output when the pedal is disengaged. This is the factory default setting.
- Buffered Bypass: The signal passes through a high-quality buffer circuit. Note that this mode requires power to function.
Power and Battery
The pedal is supplied with an Electro-Harmonix 9.6DC-200BI power supply (9.6V DC, 200mA, center negative). It also accepts 9V alkaline batteries. To change the battery or adjust the internal bypass switch, you must remove the four screws on the bottom plate.
Warning: Do not touch the circuit board while the bottom plate is removed to avoid damaging components. Using the wrong power adapter may damage the unit and void the warranty.
Practical help
Common problems
If the internal switch is set to 'Buffer', the pedal requires power to pass the signal. Ensure the power supply is connected or the battery is fresh.
Verify that the power supply is center negative and provides 9V DC. Using an incorrect adapter can damage the unit.
Before use
- Ensure the power supply is 9.6V DC 200mA with a center negative plug.
- If using a battery, use a fresh 9V alkaline battery.
- Check that the input and output cables are connected to the correct jacks.
- Verify the internal bypass switch setting (factory default is True Bypass).
Specs in practice
- Input Impedance
- 1MΩ, standard for guitar pickups.
- Output Impedance
- 650Ω to 3.3kΩ, varies based on settings.
- Current Draw
- 22mA, ensures compatibility with standard power supplies.
Model compatibility
- Compatible with Boss and Ibanez style AC adapters.
