Quick guide from the manual

The Electro-Harmonix Battalion is an all-analog bass preamp and DI pedal featuring a four-band equalizer, compressor, noise gate, and a MOSFET distortion section. This guide covers the essential setup and operation of the device.

Setup and Operation

To begin using the Battalion, follow these steps:

  • Connect a 9VDC power adapter to the jack on the top of the unit. The unit must be powered to pass a signal.
  • Connect your bass instrument cable to the INPUT jack.
  • Connect an instrument cable from the OUTPUT jack to your amplifier, or use an XLR cable from the DI OUTPUT jack to a mixing console or recording interface.
  • Click the BYPASS footswitch to engage the unit; the green LED will light up.
  • Use the COMPRESSION button to engage the compressor (blue LED).
  • Use the DISTORTION footswitch to activate the distortion circuit (red LED).

Controls

Bypass Footswitch & Green LED: Toggles between effect on and buffered bypass mode.

VOL Knob: Sets the master output level.

GATE Knob: Sets the threshold for the noise gate. Increase to cut signal when no bass signal is present.

-10dB Pad Button: Cuts the input signal by 10dB, recommended for active basses with high output.

EQ Controls: Includes BASS (below 200Hz), LO MID (280Hz), HI MID (750Hz), and TREBLE (above 2kHz) knobs. Each knob provides boost or cut, with no effect at the 50% position.

Compressor Controls: The COMPRESSOR button engages the circuit (blue LED). The COMPRESSOR knob adjusts the intensity of the compression.

Distortion Modes and Signal Flow

The Battalion offers three signal flow options for the distortion circuit, selectable via the PRE/POST/DRY EQ switch:

Pre-EQ Signal Flow
Pre-EQ Signal Flow
  • PRE EQ: Distortion is placed after the compressor and before the EQ. The EQ heavily affects the distorted signal.
  • POST EQ: EQ is placed after the compressor and before the distortion. The EQ's effect on the distorted signal is less noticeable, but boosting frequencies can drive the distortion.
  • DRY EQ: Distortion is placed after the compressor. Only the dry signal is affected by the EQ, allowing for dual-amp or dual-channel setups.

Jacks, XLR, and Power

INPUT Jack: 1/4" jack with 2.2MΩ input impedance.

OUTPUT Jack: 1/4" jack for amp or headphones (220Ω output impedance).

DRY OUTPUT Jack: Provides a dry, unaffected signal.

XLR Jack: Balanced output with dedicated volume control and ground lift button.

Power: Requires 9VDC, 100mA, center negative plug. Compatible with Boss and Ibanez style adapters (minimum 200mA).

Practical help

Common problems

No signal output

Ensure the unit is powered with a 9VDC adapter and the BYPASS footswitch is engaged (green LED on).

Distortion not active

Press the DISTORTION footswitch to engage the circuit; the red LED should illuminate.

Signal is clipping or too loud

Press the -10dB Pad button to reduce the input signal level.

Noise gate not cutting signal

Turn the GATE knob up to increase the threshold.

Before use

  • Connect a 9VDC power adapter (center negative, 100mA minimum).
  • Connect bass instrument cable to the INPUT jack.
  • Connect output cable to amplifier or DI output to mixing console.
  • Engage the BYPASS footswitch to activate the unit.
  • Adjust the -10dB Pad if using an active bass.
