Quick guide from the manual

The Hobbywing Seaking Pro 160A is a high-performance sensorless brushless electronic speed controller (ESC) designed for RC boats. This guide covers essential setup, including wiring, radio calibration, and programming. Always ensure all wires are insulated and the battery polarity is correct before powering on.

Connections

Proper wiring is critical for performance and safety:

  • Water Cooling Tube: Connect the silicon tube to the pre-mounted aluminum water cooling tube on the ESC heatsink.
  • Motor Wiring: There is no polarity on the A/B/C wires. If the motor runs in reverse, swap any two wire connections.
  • Receiver Wiring: Plug the throttle control cable into the throttle (TH) channel on the receiver. Plug the Turbo Acceleration signal wire (single yellow wire) into an unoccupied channel (e.g., CH3/CH4).
  • Battery Wiring: Ensure positive (+) connects to positive (+) and negative (-) to negative (-). Reverse polarity will damage the ESC.

ESC/Radio Calibration

Calibration is required when using a new ESC, a new transmitter, or after changing throttle channel parameters (neutral, ATV, EPA). Follow the steps for your transmitter type:

ESC/Radio Calibration steps
ESC/Radio Calibration steps
  • Pistol-style: Pull the throttle trigger to full throttle, connect the battery, wait 2 seconds for two short beeps, then release to neutral. A long beep indicates completion.
  • Board-style: Move the throttle stick to the top position, connect the battery, wait 2 seconds for two short beeps, then move to neutral (or bottom for full-range). A long beep indicates completion.

Programming

You can program the ESC using the transmitter stick or a multifunction LCD program box.

Transmitter Programming

  1. Enter Programming Mode: Turn on the transmitter, move the throttle stick to the top position, connect the battery, and wait for the "BB" beep. After 5 seconds, the motor will beep to indicate entry.
  2. Select Item: Move the throttle stick to the bottom position within 3 seconds of hearing the specific tone for the desired item.
  3. Select Parameter: Move the throttle stick to the top position within 2 seconds of hearing the tone for the desired parameter value.
  4. Exit: Move the throttle stick to the bottom position within 2 seconds after the confirmation beep.

LED Status and Protections

  • Start-up: Red LED flashes every 2 seconds if no throttle signal is detected. Green LED flashes to indicate the number of LiPo cells.
  • Operation: Red LED is solid when running forward or reverse. Green LED is solid at full throttle.
  • Low-voltage Cutoff: Red LED flashes slowly. Output is halved when battery voltage drops below the preset cutoff.
  • Thermal Protection: Green LED flashes slowly. Output is halved if internal temperature exceeds the preset limit.

Troubleshooting

If the ESC fails to operate, check the following:

  • No motor beep/LED: Check battery voltage and connections.
  • Motor beeps "BB, BB, BB": Check throttle signal and receiver binding.
  • Motor beeps "B, B, B, B": Check if "Running Mode" is set to Forward/Reverse and re-calibrate throttle.
  • Boat won't reverse: The ESC may have entered LVC or Thermal protection. Let it cool down or change the battery.

Common problems

No motor beep or LED flash after power on

Check battery voltage and ensure connections are secure. Re-solder connectors if necessary.

Motor beeps repeatedly with 'BB, BB, BB' interval

The ESC is not detecting a throttle signal. Check if the throttle cable is plugged into the correct channel and ensure the transmitter is on and bound.

Motor beeps repeatedly with 'B, B, B, B' interval

The ESC cannot recognize the throttle neutral position. Set 'Running Mode' to 'Forward/Reverse' and re-calibrate the throttle range.

Boat won't reverse

The ESC may have entered LVC or Thermal protection. Change the battery or allow the ESC to cool down.

Before use

  • Ensure all wires and connections are well insulated.
  • Verify battery polarity before connecting to the ESC.
  • Calibrate the throttle range before first use.
  • Ensure the water cooling tube is properly connected.
  • Set transmitter throttle channel parameters (D/R, EPA, ATL) to 100% and TRIM to 0.

Images and diagrams

  • The wiring diagram illustrates the connection between the battery, ESC, motor, and receiver.
  • The programming table lists the 10 programmable items and their corresponding parameter options.

Model compatibility

  • Designed for Mono2 and other race boats with a length of less than 120cm.
  • Supports 2-6S LiPo batteries.
  • Requires a soldering iron of at least 60W for wire connections.
