Quick guide from the manual

The Horizon Hobby UBEC 10A is a high-performance external switching BEC designed for RC vehicles and aircraft. It steps down battery voltage to provide a stable power supply to your receiver and servos. Key operational requirements include ensuring the correct jumper setting for your desired voltage and properly disconnecting any existing built-in BEC from your ESC to avoid conflicts.

Installation

The installation method depends on whether your Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) has a built-in BEC function:

  • If your ESC has no built-in BEC: Connect the input end of the UBEC directly to the battery pack and insert the output end into an open channel on your receiver.
  • If your ESC has a built-in BEC: You must disconnect the BEC output of the ESC by removing the middle wire of the ESC's throttle cable. Ensure you insulate the wire connector if it is removed from the plastic housing.

Voltage Output Adjustment

The output voltage can be adjusted to three levels (6.0V, 7.4V, or 8.4V) by placing the jumper on the appropriate pins:

  • 6.0V: No jumper used.
  • 7.4V: Use the jumper on the two outer pins.
  • 8.4V: Use the jumper on the two inner pins.

Note: The BEC may not maintain a consistent 7.4V output when using a 2S LiPo battery because the output voltage will reduce with the battery voltage. It is suggested to use 7.4V or 8.4V output with a 3S LiPo battery.

LED Indicators

The LED provides status information regarding the UBEC's operation:

  • Red LED ON: The UBEC is outputting normal voltage.
  • Red LED OFF: Indicates a potential issue. Check the following:
    • Ensure a fully charged battery is connected.
    • Check the connection between the UBEC and the battery.
    • Ensure the switch is connected.
    • Over-current protection may be activated.
    • The UBEC may be overheated (must not exceed 130°C/266°F).
    • The UBEC may be too close to an older AM/FM receiver (keep at least 5cm away).

Safety and Maintenance

This product is not a toy and is not intended for children under 14 years. It is designed for unmanned, hobby-grade remote-controlled vehicles and aircraft. Always operate with caution and common sense. Do not attempt to disassemble the product or use it with incompatible components.

Common problems

Red LED is OFF

Check battery charge, verify all connections, ensure the switch is connected, check for over-current/overheating, or move the UBEC at least 5cm away from AM/FM receivers.

UBEC overheating

Ensure the operating temperature does not exceed 130°C (266°F).

Voltage instability with 2S LiPo

The BEC may not maintain a consistent 7.4V output with a 2S LiPo. Use a 3S LiPo for 7.4V or 8.4V output settings.

Before use

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged.
  • Verify the jumper is set to the correct voltage (6.0V, 7.4V, or 8.4V).
  • If the ESC has a built-in BEC, disconnect the middle wire of the ESC throttle cable.
  • Insulate any wires removed from the plastic housing.
  • Ensure the UBEC is mounted at least 5cm away from older AM/FM receivers.
