Quick guide from the manual
This document provides essential information for installing and using the JBL Stage 122D subwoofer. It covers enclosure recommendations, wiring, and technical data. For optimal performance, professional installation is strongly recommended.
Subwoofer enclosure types
The Stage 122D is designed to perform well in various enclosure types. Your choice should depend on available cargo space, amplifier power, and listening preferences.
- Sealed Enclosures: Provide the flattest frequency response and widest bandwidth. They are more forgiving of construction errors but require more amplifier power.
- Vented Enclosures: Offer greater efficiency and higher output in the 40Hz–60Hz range. They require precise volume and port dimensions. An infrasonic filter is recommended to prevent overdriving.
- Infinite-Baffle Mounting: Possible, but mechanical power handling will be reduced by half.
Mounting the subwoofer
The subwoofer should be mounted from the outside of the enclosure. Use the included foam mounting gasket to ensure a leak-free seal between the subwoofer frame and the enclosure.
Connecting the amplifier
The subwoofer connectors are compatible with bare or tinned wires. Use a wire gauge between 14AWG and 8AWG. For wire runs longer than 6 feet (2 meters), use a heavier gauge wire.

Common problems
Consider the RMS and peak power-handling ratings to be half of what is listed in the specifications.
Use an electronic infrasonic filter to reduce the chance of overdriving below the enclosure's resonance frequency.
Ensure all joints are sealed with silicone caulk during construction.
Before use
- Ensure you have a qualified professional for installation if you lack experience.
- Choose an enclosure type based on your cargo space and amplifier power.
- Use the included foam mounting gasket for a leak-free seal.
- Select appropriate wire gauge (14AWG to 8AWG) based on run length.
- Keep your sales receipt in a safe place.
Specs in practice
- Power Handling
- 250 Wrms (1000W Peak) indicates the power capacity of the subwoofer.
- Nominal Impedance
- The subwoofer supports 2 Ohms or 8 Ohms configurations.
- Frequency Response
- The range of frequencies the subwoofer can reproduce (34Hz – 200Hz).
Images and diagrams
- The manual provides wiring diagrams for connecting the amplifier to the subwoofer in 2 Ohm and 8 Ohm configurations.
- Volume and port dimension diagrams are provided for both sealed (1.4 ft³ / 40 liters) and vented (1.6 ft³ / 45 liters) enclosures.
Model compatibility
- Compatible with sealed, vented, and prefabricated band-pass enclosures.
